Definition-a share in the ownership of a company

a payout that some companies make to shareholders that reflects the company earnings
Typically older, well-established companies pay dividends
Dividends are not guaranteed so a company can stop paying at any time
Initial Public Offering- the first sale of a stock by a private company to the public
often issued by smaller companies looking to build
Holding a company's stock means that you are one of the many (share holders) owners of a company
you have a claim to everything the company owns
If a company goes under if there is money left the owners get a cut of what's left
