Double click anywhere & add an idea Sputnik Sputnik was the first artificial satellite to orbit earth. The satellite was 23 inches in diameter and weighed about 183 pounds Each orbit it took around earth took about 96 minutes Sputnik was not visible from earth but the casing of the R-7 booster was Education When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, many Americans grew concerned that the United States was losing it's competitive edge. In 1958, the United States government responded by creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as an independant agency for space exploration. The same year, Congress passed and President Eisenhower signed into law the National Defence Education Act. The measure was designed to improve science and mathematics instruction in the schools so that the United States could meet the scientific and technical challenge from the Soviet Union. The act provided millions of dollars in low cost loans to college students and significant reductions in repayments if they ultimately became teachers.
