CONVERTING MEASUREMENTS
ORIGAMI
Make an origami frog...
Make your frog jump and measure how many cm the frog jumped.

CONVERTING FROM ONE METRIC UNIT TO ANOTHER
The most common metric conversions are between mm, cm, m and km.

1 cm = 10 mm

1 m = 100 cm

1 km = 1000 m

1470 cm = ______ m
1 m = 100 cm
1470 cm = 14.70 m
/ 100
1 cm = 10 mm
2.8 cm = _____ mm
2.8 cm = 28 mm
x 10
Example: Write 1470 cm in m

Match the cards to try your skill.
CONVERTING UNITS OF MASS AND CAPACITY
Once you are confident with conversions between mm, cm, m and km, converting units of mass and capacity is easier.

For example:

1 km = 1000 m, so 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 tonne = 1000 kg

1 m = 100 cm, so 1 l (litre) = 100 cl (centilitres)

1 m = 1000 mm, so 1 g = 1000 mg (milligrams) and 1 l = 1000 ml

Example: A packet of biscuits weighs 150 g. Find the weight of 12 packets of biscuits:

in g
in kg

Try your skill and match the cards.

Change your measurement to mm.
Solution:
12 × 150 = 1800, so 12 packets of biscuits weigh 1800g. The answer is 1.8 kg.
Remember that 1 kg = 1000 g. To convert from g to kg, we divide by 1000.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this lesson you will be able:
All students:
to convert units of length: between cm and mm, cm and m, m and km;
to convert units of capacity and mass: between ml and l, g and kg;
to use converting units to solve practical problems.
Some students:
to convert between any units of length: mm, cm, m and km;
convert between kg and t.
