The purpose of today is not to explain how to make a Digital Story (that takes 2+ days training!), but to demonstrate the power of Digital Storytelling & to discuss how Digital Storytelling can be used effectively in an organisational setting
Understand the importance of ownership and the process of creation through a model that places the storyteller at the heart of the experience

Understand how storytelling principles can be used in your organisation to promote participation and engagement both on an off line using a range of free tools and platforms

We all tell stories...We always tell stories
Stories surround us everyday.

Stories allow us to connect with one another

Stories are about sharing ideas, experiences and feelings

We always tell stories and always have
What does participatory media mean for a 21st Century organisation?
The existence of tools to capture stories & document our lives is not new.
The affordability & availability of these tools though
now make it possible for virtually everyone to
produce and publish their own stories
These tools are constantly changing & developing. Use whatever is to hand.
It's about people.

And emotion.

Digital Storytelling is only impactful when done by organisations in a non-prescriptive & genuine way. Otherwise it is merely media creation
"We've got a conference coming up"
"What will we put on the big screen?"
"Let's make some digital stories to show how great we are!"
Who's story is it anyway?
Stories have always been used to help us understand the world around us and as such hold a great deal of power.

Who's power is it though? Finding an answer to this question will help you as an organisation understand the potential impact of storytelling in your work

No more broadcasting. Participation is based on conversation. Audiences are looking for genuine and honest dialogue. Everyone is 'allowed' to take part

Our way is all about making Digital Storytelling truly available to everyone by using free pc-based software.

If you try and be prescriptive in the stories you tell as an organisation they will lack authenticity. If you allow the story to come naturally your organisational work WILL come across.
Enthusiasm and an inquisitive, playful approach will help people engage and in turn produce an engaging story that has multiple uses
