Reflection - Lea Salonga
Poetic Devices
Look at me
I will never pass for a perfect bride
Or a perfect daughter
Can it be I'm not meant to play this part
Now I see that if I were truly to be myself
I would break my family's heart
Who is that girl I see
staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection someone I don't know
somehow I can not hide
who I am, though I've tried
when will my reflection show who I am inside
when will my reflection show who I am inside
Analysis
The song is about Mulan and how she feels uncomfortable with the full
face of makeup she has on, and the
clothes she is wearing, because she knows it's not who she truly is. Therefore, when Mulan sings "Why is my reflection someone I don't know?" it is because when she looks in the mirror she sees the Mulan that society wants, not the Mulan she truly is. She does not recognize herself, even though she is looking at her very own face.

Tone
The tone throughout the song is very sad and longing. Because Mulan is disappointed with herself, she sings this song with an upset tone.
Setting
The song doesn't really talk about a setting, but in the movie Mulan is singing to herself in multiple different settings.
The speaker, Mulan, is struggling to please her family. She is very upset after angering the Matchmaker, and feels that if she was to show her true personality, she would dishonor her family.
In the last two sentences, the poetic device being used
is repetition.
