IS DRILLING IN THE U.S. GOOD OR BAD?
by: cole rojahn PRO! CON! PRO The USA spends $700,000,000,000 each year for gas bought from countries may or may not be our allies.

http://wilderness.org/content/why-rushing-drill-bad-idea-help-us-protect-fragile-arctic-waters America spends about $200,000 on oil per minute from foreign countries. That means the US will save millions and millions of dollars by drilling our own oil.

http://www.nrdc.org/air/transportation/aoilpolicy2.asp If the US drills our own oil, our gas prices might go down from almost $4 to about $2 like a few years ago.

http://www.financialnut.com/why-are-gas-prices-going-up-agai/ Imagine this stack of money and times it by 7 and that's how much we pay foreign countries! Compare the old prices to the prices today due to the oil the USA pays to other countries. CON! If the US starts drilling for oil in American waters, this may create tension with other countries. Saudi Arabia drills 264 billion barrels of oil while the US only drills 21 billion barrels. We will save money but may strain foreign relations.

http://www.leftcoastrebel.com/2011/05/who-sets-gas-prices-at-pump.html PRO! Off shore drilling will keep the US thriving with oil and a better economy.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/06/more-us-oil-drilling-wont-help-gas-prices_n_858473.html CON! Offshore oil drilling could save us money but could cause more oil spills, pollution, and weaken the population of marine life.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn14529-offshore-oil-drilling-in-the-us-whats-at-stake.html PRO! If we do our own offshore drilling for oil, there will be more American job and business opportunities.

http://mhutch.blogspot.com/2008/06/proscons-of-offshore-oil-drilling.html CON! If we want to offshore drill, the start up cost is high. It could range from $60,000,000-$100,000,000 to build each oil rig.

http://www.heatusa.com/energy-policy/pros-cons-drilling-oil-eastern-seaboard/ This is the amount of money spent on building an offshore oil rig. $100,000,000 PRO! Alaskan residents who pay the highest for gas may see a decrease in cost or receive reimbursements because of their state stipends.

http://usconservatives.about.com/od/environment/a/AlaskaOil.htm You could go from this to this Major drilling factors in the world CON! Offshore oil drilling is a human health hazard. Oil from the ocean floor may contain mercury, lead, arsenic.

http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/energy/offshore-drilling-controversy2.htm PRO! Congress has created tax incentives to stimulate domestic natural gas and oil production financed by private sources.

http://www.encapgroup.com/taxbenefits/ CON! America can benefit by a decrease in oil consumption and start using wind, solar, and the next generation of biofuel technology.

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2008/0812/gop-sees-advantage-in-offshore-oil-drilling PRO! Opening restricted areas to offshore oil production may generate money which could be used to decrease the national debt.

http://www.ehow.com/m/facts_5019434_pros-cons-offshore-oil-drilling.html THE END CON! The infrastructure required to drill wells and transport offshore oil has created erosion problems in some states like Louisiana.
