Beginning of Career
Taylor Swift music has strong pop influence
She is noted as one of the reasons for the increase in popularity of country music in a time where the music industry is struggling financially
Speak Now over a million copies in the first week, sophomore album Fearless sold more than 3 million copies, self titled debut went double platinum and she has been on best selling tours.
“My career always involved being the person in charge of what I was portraying to people,” she said. “I never wanted to be an image of something I didn’t believe in, an image that somebody else had put together. The idea of that just really scared me, more than the idea of failing.”
Her Rise to Stardom
“Red” released in 2012 Swift’s first Billboard Top 100 chart toppers
"I Knew You Were Trouble" and "We are Never Getting Back Together" didn’t even make it to the top 10 on the country charts
These continues with “1989” which will release soon, but is said to not have any songs even including acoustic guitar
Before premiering “Shake it Off,” Taylor Swift announced that she had a confession:
"I woke up every day not wanting but
needing to make a new style of music."
Swift’s “Breakup” with Country Music
After Swift released her shake it off video, CMA tweeted the first image but it was quickly deleted and replaced with the second when it became clear that many people were taking it as a pointed remark
Many believe that Swift owes her career to country and that she will eventually come back to the genre
Country’s Reaction to Swift’s New Career Path
“She has a high level of social leverage over the actions of young girls. She sings what she does to influence her listeners in a more positive way than other celebrities” (Huston)
Her musical lyrics often contain positive advice.
A Positive Influence
'Cause when you're fifteen and somebody tells you they love you
You're gonna believe them
And when you're fifteen and your first kiss makes your head spin around
But in your life you'll do things greater than dating the boy on the football team
But I didn't know it at fifteen
"'Cause I'm not your princess, this ain't a fairytale
I'm gonna find someone someday who might actually treat me well
This is a big world, that was a small town
There in my rear view mirror, disappearing now
And it's too late for you and your white horse
Now it's too late for you and your white horse to catch me now.”
“When we took polaroids with her, she took her time with every single person and that meant a lot”
“She’s genuine. She connects and relates to her audience through her own experiences [displayed in her music]. She doesn't go for shock value.” (Parr)
Importance of connecting with your fans through music.
“The ones that hit them like
an arrow through the heart
or have made them feel
or allowed them to feel like they really
aren’t alone in feeling so alone

Feminist Taylor Swift
"As an artist, it's your call to stand still or to grow, and if you decide your job is to get to as many people as possible, then this is certainly a clear-cut way to go there," the label exec says. "She's a brilliant caretaker of her own career -- she always has been -- and I'm guessing she'll pull the audience along with her. It's not the first time this genre has had this issue." (Aswad)
This movement is almost reprimanded by the country world but at the same time die-hard Swift fans will follow her no matter what she does (Sanneh)
