Omar Rodriguez-Lopez BaCkground Born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico
Raised in El Paso, Texas
began playing bass at 12
moved on to guitar at 15
age 17 joined At The Drive-In
left and started dub reggae group De Facto
De Facto eventually became The Mars Volta

The Mars Volta Progressive rock band started by Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala
Latin, jazz influence
Omar produces all the bands music
John Frusciante and Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers have played with the Mars Volta
won Grammy in 2009 for Best Hard Rock Performance


Uses over 25 different effect pedals to acheive the Mars Volta's sound
Improvises during songs, changes the meter of songs, uses complex time signatures
Produces Mars Volta songs where every musician plays their part without hearing the rest of the song

Influenced Main influence is Larry Harlow
Other influences include Jimi Hendrix, Genesis, Can, King Crimson
He has be recognized by other guitarists such as Joe Satriani and Kirk Hammett of Metallica
