Catching Fire
(A science fiction novel)

Author: Suzanne Collins
Presentation by: Gracie Culley
Catching Fire is the second book in the Hunger Games trilogy. The story begins after Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return from winning the 74th annual Hunger Games. Shortly after they get home Katniss is greeted by President Snow who is not happy with the stunt Katniss and Peeta pulled in the arena. He threatens to hurt the ones she loves if she and Peeta do not convince everyone that they are still in love on the Victory Tour. On the tour, Peeta proposed to Katniss to help their story. After returning from the Tour, Katniss is told that she may have helped create rebellions among the districts. A few months later Katniss learns that for the Quarter Quill she will have to return to the Games with fellow tribute Peeta.
The theme of Catching Fire is perseverance. This is the theme because, throughout the whole story, no matter what obstacles Kaniss and Peeta faced, they stopped at nothing to accomplish what the were striving for, like Katniss keeping all of her family safe by acting like she was in love with Peeta. Another example of perseverense is when Katniss and Peeta made allies in the arena in order to survive.
"Then I get it, what it means. At least, for me. District 12 has only three existing victors to choose from. Two male. One female...I am going back into the arena. (pg. 223)

I chose this excerpt because it represents the suspenseful tone of this entire book. This is the last line of one of the later chapters. It makes a reader want to continue into the next chapter.
Likes and Dislikes

- plot

- ending
I would recommend Catching Fire to anyone who likes adventurous novels and who are willing to be left hanging until they have read all three books.
"Life in District 12 isn't really so different from life in the arena. At some point, you have to stop running and turn around and face whoever wants you dead. The hard thing is finding the courage to do it." (pg. 156)
