He signed his freedom papers when he was 53. By the time fortune was 60, he made the last few payments became a free man. AMOS FORTUNE These people helped greatly in the contribution of the underground railroads. Harriet " Moses" Tubman Thomas Gerrett Thomas was a white man that helped in the underground railroads for a very long time and he was good friends with Harriet Tubman. he was arrested and fined 5,400 after being caught for helping. he still continued after all of this. the underground railroad is a network if tunnels that lead to a safe house. a safe is a secure location that slaves often escaped to in the 19th century. History
Life as a Slave Slavery started in British North America around 1619, a Dutch ship brought 20 Africans to enslave. The slaves would do crop work and be brutally punish if they fought back or slacked on their job. The Beginning Of Slavery In 1705 owners of slaves started to auction slaves off as property. Mothers would travel with their children. Runaways would be killed on scene. Slaves as Property Start Of The Underground Railroad Started in the 19th Century and reached the height of transporting slaves in the 1850's - 1860's. 100,000 slaves escaped via Railroad. Many slaves would escape out at night when it was the safest because no one would be out. Many households, that were against slavery would keep captive of slaves for the night until it was safe again for them to travel. Escape Plan Some slaves would get caught and go through cruel punishments. A basic punishment would be getting whipped on the back with a leather whip. Or many slave owners would send the slaves to be executed. Punishments The Members of society of the Quakers are responsible for the start of the Underground Railroad. These Quakers helped conduct the railroad. Who Created The Underground Railroad When the American Civil War ended. At the time Abraham Lincoln was President of the USA, he came out with the Emancipation Proclamation which was an executive order; declaring freedom for all slaves. On January 1st 1863 this order took place. However the Underground railroad stopped running in 1865 almost 2 years after slavery ended. Most people used the railroad to escape illegally into Northern and Southern Canada because they were still not allowed to leave the States. The End Of The Underground Railroad Terms Slaves made different code words so that they could communicate with each other without the slave owners knowing what they meant. Baggage: escaping slaves

River Jordan: Mississippi River or Ohio River Laws The laws of the city's allowed slaves to be whipped, starved, tortured, mutilated, or branded. The slaves had no rights and the laws said that slaves were not allowed to marry, vote, move about freely, or get together friends. Some laws allowed slaves to be forced to have children or to be put to work 18 hours a day!
