Saving the envrionment Ways to help What to recycle
Why recycle? "Every month Americans throw out enough recyclable glass bottles and jars to fill up a skyscraper." "Each of us uses approximately one 100-foot-tall Douglas fir tree in paper and wood products per year." "One gallon of used motor oil can contaminate 1 million gallons of water." "Electricity production is the leading cause of industrial air pollution in the United States, and is responsible for 40 percent of the nation's carbon emissions that contribute to global climate change." "An estimated 80,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using enough aluminum foil to cover over 50 acres of space -- that's almost 40 football fields. All "that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it." "Rainforests are being cut down at the rate of 100 acres per minute!" 1. Avoid plastic bags, and invest stronger re-usable bags.
2. Conserve H2O
3. Forget Pre-heating
4. Switch to compact fluorescent lightbulbs
~ Plastics can take up to 400 years to break down in a landfill
~ 1 Ton of Plastics an amount of energy equal to 1-2,000 gallons of gasoline
~ 1 Ton of Newspaper SAVES 17 TREES & an amount of energy equal to 100 gallons of gasoline
~ Over the past 30 years, the waste produced in the United States has more than doubled, from 88 million tons in 1960 to about 232 million tons in 2002!
Incinerating 10,000 tons of plastic waste creates 1 job, landfilling the same amount creates 6 jobs while recycling the same 10,000 tons creates 36 jobs... So...now do you see why we should recycle?? All it took was 6 million bottles
