How do Bats Keep From Flying into Your Hair?
Bats are the only mammals that can fly.
Bats, like the best submarines, are equipped with Sonar.

Bats emit sounds from their mouth or nose and listen for returning soundwaves to orient themselves, locate prey, and find water to drink (Van Ryckegham, 1998). Bat sounds are usually inaudible to humans. The frequency and decibel ranges can vary greatly. A bat that emits softer sounds needs larger, more sensitive ears to capture feedback (Harris, 2013).

cave bats are insect eating bats.
All of them are known to eat an incredibly amazing amount.

This question seeks to produce cognitive dissonance in the learner. For a learner who does not yet know about echolocation, a sense of mystery and curiosity is aroused.

Remember our submarines? Sonar works underwater as well as in the air.
Even though dolphins and bats are not closely related genetically, both types of mammals developed echolocation as a hunting strategy. This is called convergent evolution, when quite distinct species independently evolve quite similar strategic mutations (Pennisi, 2013).
This new wrinkle in the lesson material aims to decontextualize the exploration from bats specifically to all mammals in general and to provide scientific approaches to transfer to other analytic contexts. The submarine cue also seeks to provide diagnostic access to the learning process, to enable learners to monitor their own progress.

Vampire bats are creatures that DO drink blood. They have a strong repulsive effect on humans.
Is this the bat that comes to mind when of halloween? Although these vampires don't normally feed on people, they do drink the blood of animals, and they can feed on their sleeping prey almost undetected. And people have feared them for centuries!
