EDUC70191: The Development of
Educational Technology

Prezicast: TPCK

Mishra & Koehler 2006

building on Shulman, 1986
The scenarios showed that we use
various criteria when selecting from
the ecology of resources
The teacher uses
'Content Knowledge'
in various ways to
filter the resources...
...and so does the student. Both
can do so instrumentally.... the
'is it in the test' syndrome REWORD
Pedagogical Knowledge is
'how to teach'....

Practice, ideally informed by a knowledge of pedagogical theory - and one's own experience (reflection)
But Shulman noted that PK is not
applicable in generic ways: it should
not be seen as separate from content
PCK...
"the ways of representing and formulating the subject that make it comprehensible to others’’
(Shulman)
The structure of activities and materials on this course reflects my PCK
TK (Technological Knowledge) is
now required....

Technologies are not 'neutral', they shape
what can be taught, and how, intersecting
with content and pedagogy
TPCK is an integrated set of skills
and knowledge that is essential for
professional development in teachers...
But: it is knowledge which
may be diffused across a team
somehow
Students also actively generate
their own learning environments...
The teacher is not completely
free to embed their TPCK in the
environment.
End.
