Transcript of The beginning
The Battle of Yorktown
on October 17, Cornwallis discovered that the
French army was now blocking his retreat and all of his reinforcements. eventually he was surrounded and cornered so,he surrendered his british army in shame. George had won!
French ships came to the aid of George Washington's army. George Washington and the french general were trying their best to steal NY. when in the middle of nowhere a messenger boy came with the news of the british encampment in Yorktown. George said he wanted to take the fort. when Cornwallis heard the news he would either need to flee to NY were he wouldn't be safe. there was a slim chance he would live because he could run into the french. he could flee to NC were he wouldn't be safe either, or fight Washington's army.
What if that hadn't all happened? well, we wouldn't have anything to stop the revolutionary war and because of that, the U.S would probably have swollen in size.
used in the war
the battle took place in Yorktown
VA from September 28 through October 19 1781. it started when the British general and Earl Charles Cornwallis were sent to Yorktown to take a fort near the river.Henery Clinton said he wanted a port so he could supply the british regulars in VA.
The British troops had ships that
Cornwallis was wanting to help him. But the French and American troops who were fighting together had turned the british army away by fighting and shooting away at at them until they gave up.
19 days later...
As you can see, one BIG part of the British army was surrounded by the Americans and the French on this map. While on the other side of the York River stood a little part of the British army surrounded like the others. What I think is that the Americans and French had an ADVANTAGE because their army had 17,000 soldiers while the British had 9,000 soldiers.
WHEN and WHERE did the
What was one of the options
Cornwallis had after he had heard the news?
Some of the
weapons used in the
Battle of Yorktown was
some 18 and 24 pound Siege Guns, Howitzers (a kind of cannon) and, Mortars. My favorite is the 18 pound Siege Gun. To be honest, I've NEVER seen one but they SOUND cool.
How did the American and
French troop make some of the British turn away?
Who was blocking who's Reinforcements?
What was one of the things
that could have happened if the War hadn't happened?
How many soldiers did the Americans have?
What are Howitzers?
THIS WAS DEDICATED TO THE PEOPLE WHO FAUGHT IN THE WAR AND GEORGE WASHINGTON. HE WAS A PRETTY GOSH DARN GOOD PRESIDENT EVEN THOUGH I WASN'T ALIVE.
