Transcript of Divergent
By: Veronica Roth
Theo James playes Tobias Eaton, also known as Four.
Shailene Woodley, plays Beatrice Prior, also known as Tris.
Tris wakes to all the non-divergent initiates under a simulation, she goes along with it until she finds Tobias, they break away only for Tris to be shot and both of them are caught by Dauntless soldiers. Janine then puts Tobias under a "Divergent - proof'' simulation and tries to drown Tris, Luckily her mother saves her but later is shot protecting Tris.
Tris is reunited with her Dad and Caleb at a factionless safehouse. Marcus, Caleb, Tris, and her dad sneak into Dauntless headquarters to shut down the simulation. Tris's dad is shot in the process, but she soon finds Tobias and the simulation data. Tris is forced to fight Tobias who almost kills her, until she finds a way to snap him out of it and get him to resurface. She takes the hard drive but doesn't destroy it, yet.
In a futuristic Chicago setting, there are five factions, Amity, Candor, Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless. Beatrice Prior is from Abnegation. The Abnegation are known for being the selfless faction. When Beatrice looks at their way of life, she thinks it is very beautiful. But when she tries to live the life herself, it is the hardest thing in the world for her. No matter how selfless she tries to be, it never seems to be enough. Every day at school, she watches the Dauntless dependents jump off of the train that brings them here, she admires them. Her parents think that the Dauntless are crazy for being so reckless, but Beatrice develops a calling towards this fearless faction.
Man vs. Man
"One choice can transform you". Tris chose to become one of the Dauntless. By choosing Dauntless she became brave and strong, but she also became cruel to her enemies.
The story is set in Chicago, Illinois in a sort of futuristic metropolis, mixed with very run - down buildings that keep the setting down to earth.
The dynamic character in Divergent is Tris. In the beginning of the book, she is this vulnerable little Abnegation girl who does everything she can to be a true Abnegation, but she is never enough. Once she starts Dauntless initiation, her personality flips, she is now more selfless than she ever thought she could be.
When every faction member turns 16, they take the aptitude test. This test recommends which faction the 16 year old's are best suited for. However, Beatrice is different, while most tests rule out all but one faction, her's only ruled out two, Candor and Amity. This is called Divergence. Although, her strongest calling is towards the Dauntless, and that is what she chooses. Beatrice, now Tris, follows through with initiation and is doing not so well, until stage two. This stage is her safe haven, yet it is also a living nightmare. The simulations are easy for her to manipulate, but she is very bad at hiding her secret. She lasts until stage three, which are the fear landscapes. She is safe for now because everyone can manipulate these. At the very end of all the initiates' fear landscapes, Eric tags everyone with a 'tracker' in case any one is missing, this arouses Tris's suspicion.
Peter, Drew, and Al abduct Tris in the middle of the night and hang her over the Chasm. To Tris's luck, Tobias comes to her rescue after hearing a scream and beats up Drew while scared Al and Peter run. Tris is severely bruised.
"I feel like someone just breathed new air into my lungs. I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless.
I am Divergent."
"Abnegation and Dauntless are both broken, their members scattered. We are like the factionless now. I do not know what life will be like, separated from a faction - it feels disengaged, like a leaf divided from a tree that gives it sustenance. We are creatures of loss; we have left everything behind. I have no home, no path, and no certainty. I am no longer Tris, the selfless, or Tris, the brave. I suppose now, I must become more of either."
