Operation Overlord
June 6, 1944 Basic Outline
June 6th, 1944
Battle was in Normandy, France
The Battle lasted til August 19th 1944
The Importance of the location: The Germans expected (Allies) to come through the English Chanel.
Instead went more East

The Allies used multiple strategys
Air Assault- 24,000 troups at around 1:00 AM
At 6:30 rest of troups came in a amphibious landing
The landing took a 50 mile stretch throughout the shore
The coast was divided in 5 sections Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.

The Allies attacks suprised Germans (still prepared)

Largest amphibious invasion, 175,00
5,000 ships were used
Hitler was asleep while invasion began
Allie Commanders predicted 10,000 Allie deaths (100,000 actually died)
D-Day was originally planned for June 5 but there was bad weather
