The Welfare of Animals Transport Order 2006 Pet Travel Scheme The Pet Travel Scheme allows pet dogs, cats and ferrets to come into the UK without going through Quarantine and take them to other countries and back without Quarantine, but they must be vaccinated against Rabies. DEFRA Codes of Practice Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. They cover animal welfare. Helps stop spread of disease. DEFRA is the governing body for most of the legislation for transport. CITES CITES Is 'the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora' it regulates the trade of animal specimens of wild animals and plants so that it doesn't threaten their survival. By Kerry Payton, Katie Ainsworth and Alice Dean Movement and Transport of Exotic Animals The Pet travel Scheme does not include Exotic animals in its legislation, so is not really relevant and can possibly improve in this area. States that the animal should be fit for travel- vet checks before hand, not too stressed, not heavily pregnant or in the last 10% of the gestation period.
Journeys over certain hours also require breaks. Effectiveness Effectiveness Applies to All vertebrate animals including exotics, however some exotics like reptiles are difficult to transport due to some specific needs. Conclusion Effectiveness CITES helps to protect any endangered species. It also
helps prevent illegal smuggling of specimens, so any exotic animal that can be or is smuggled into the country is protected from welfare problems.
