Radiance Book by Alyson Noel

Created by Nicole Laszko Riley Bloom: Riley is a blonde, Twelve-year-old-girl who died in a car crash along with her mother, father, and labrador named Buttercup. Though her older sister, Ever Bloom, lived. After dying, Riley has trouble accepting the fact that she's dead, so she remains on the Earth Plane for almost a year until Ever convinces her to move on. After crossing over and receiving her job as a Soul Catcher, a person who convinces other earthbound spirits to cross over. She is very rebellious and doesn't often listen to her guide, always trying to prove him wrong. Bodhi: Bodhi is a fourteen-year-old boy, his life taken by bone cancer right before he was about to go pro with skateboarding. He is Riley's guide and he is also a soul-catcher. When he first met Riley, he put up an act as if he were a super smart kid, hoping to earn her respect so that she would listen to him. Instead, It caused her to label him as "Dorky Guy" and not listen to him at all. The Council: The Council's members consist of Aurora, Celia, Samson, and Claude. They decide every soul's future, as in, what job they have. They also decide if someone is innocent or guilty of a crime and what their punishment would be. The Wailing Woman: A ghost that has been haunting Warmington castle for hundreds of years. She focuses on her sorrow and it keeps her rooted to her spot by the window in the castle's tall turret. Radiant Boy A ghost that has haunted Warmington Castle for hundreds of years. Not wanting to move on because of the fame their haunts brought them. Bodhi takes Riley to a castle to do her first Soul Catch. Her target is the Radiant Boy, who has been haunting the castle for hundreds of years. Bodhi made a bet with her that if she could complete the job, he would teach her how to fly. When Riley first meets the Radiant Boy, he tries to scare her out of her wits. It worked for a moment until Riley realized that he couldn't hurt her, she was already dead. So she ended up just not playing into his little tricks which surprised him enough to let her talk to him. It turned out that the Radiant Boy was not one, but three brothers working together, and she was able to cross them over. Rising Action Riley wakes up in the morning (Yes, ghosts sleep ) and goes through the morning routine, where her and her family are introduced. Then she goes to school and meets Bodhi (Dorky Guy) who brings her to the council so they can place her in her job, which was a Soul Catcher. Exposition: Even though Bodhi is a guide, he still has to complete some of his own jobs. Now he has to cross over the wailing woman, who lives in the same castle as the Radiant Boy(s). When he tries talking to her, Riley accidentally looks in her eyes and gets pulled into her world, a sea of murky black water, representing her sorrow and grief. Bodhi has to go in after her and he forces her to stay out of the way so he can complete his task on his own. Riley had to just stay back, not knowing if they would ever be out of the Wailing Woman's world. Climax: Bodhi manages to rid the Wailing Woman of her sorrow and he keeps his promise to Riley. He shows her how to fly and she finds that it is much easier than she thought. But the issue of getting Buttercup into the air is much more complicated. When they finally get him to fly, they go to London, at Riley's request. Falling Action As Riley watched the busy life down in London, she realized that being dead wasn't really so bad - that life still goes on. She stopped dwelling on the fact that she was a ghost and just keep living her life, well, her afterlife. About the Author My favorite scene from the book was when Buttercup learned to fly. Riley and Bodhi were having trouble trying to teach him how, but they finally figured it out! My Favorite Scene My Favorite Scene My favorite scene from this book was the ending where Riley and Bodhi are trying to get Buttercup to fly. Thanks for Reading!!! I recently read a book by Alyson Noel called Radiance. It was very interesting and taught a great lesson about acceptance and moving on with life. This book was well-written, easy to follow, and had a great story line. I feel that Alyson Noel expressed her characters and setting very well. Although, there were some instances where it was difficult to understand the scene she was describing.
One thing that I would have liked to see in the book is more detail about Riley's family. Her parents and her sister, Ever, weren't spoken about very much. I believe some more information about them would have made the book perfect. Alyson Noel was born on December 3, 1965 in Orange County California.
