Transcript of Ukrainian Easter

UKR 526 Ukrainian Easter Ukrainian Easter Easter is the culmination of the Passion of Christ, preceded by Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. What is Easter? Easter (Paskha) is a Christian festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion at Calvary. When do we celebrate Easter? Easter is a moveable feast (the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon), following the northern hemisphere's vernal equinox).

The equinox is reckoned to be on 21 March. The date of Easter therefore varies between 22 March and 25 April.

Eastern Christianity bases its calculations on the Julian calendar whose 21 March corresponds, during the 21st century, to 3 April in the Gregorian calendar, in which the celebration of Easter therefore varies between 4 April and 8 May. Content of the Presentation January 30, 2013 Myroslava Uniat At Easter night boys make a fire near the church and stay there till morning. To maintain the fire they steal barrels and wheels from jews. People who stayed at home do not sleep the whole night and they also maintain the fire in the house. Those people who break this rule will be sleepy the whole year. Some men go to search for treasures, since at this time they are sparkling. The bells ring for morning liturgy people dressed in festive outfits go to the church (none should stay at home). Children are sitting either by the church or on the carts.

The head of the village orders to take "Khoruhvy", cross and Turin. All people go out of the church. Caretaker looks carefully to make sure that all people have gone out. He locks the door of the church and takes care so that the witch does not get the lock. 1) What is Easter?
2) When do we celebrate Easter?
3) Actions, beliefs and objects based
on Chubyns'kyi
4)Does Woropai present it
in another way?
5)Analytical questions When "Khrystos Voskres" is sung for the first time, hunters who have the guns with them try to shoot at this moment with the hope to kill the devil. Witches with horns and jars of milk on their heads (in the church in the morning liturgy);

To be able to see the witches you have to take a piece of wood with a little hole from the coffin of the dead.

Look not distinguishing out of the crowd, otherwise you will be strangled by the witches.

The witch is supposed to touch the priest The priest says "Khrystos voskres"

Some people holding the coin in their hand instead of saying "Voistynu voskres" answer "antaliuz maiu", which gives a magic power to the coin (for future income)

Keep a ruble in the pocket the whole Easter day. If someone says "Khrystos voskres", answer "And I have ruble" (do it three times).

If instead of responding with traditional "Voistynu voskres" to the first priest's greeting you wish something, your wish will definitely come true. Easter breads, eggs and other food are blessed. Blessed eggs shells should not fall on the floor and be trampled. The bones left from the blessed meat food should be dug to prevent the fields from the hail. If people are smiling while talking at the table, it is believed that devil is walking in the house wearing invisible hat. Easter greetings hurry home rozhovitysia (the host takes a plate fool of blessed food, goes around the table for three times, then stands in front of the icons, cuts several eggs on the plate, gives pieces to each member of the family saying: "God forbid, that we healthy and happy wait till this big holiday of Christ Resurrection next year!" everyone tries to get on the belfry first and ring the bells. Those who did it first will have a good harvets of backwheat. The first Esater eggs shells are thrown out on the water. On Easter day people have to have supper before sunset, otherwise they will have to deal with nyctalopia. Does Woropai say the same? - a lot of the same things (witches, coins, Easter eggs shells should not fall, wash faces, ruble in the pocket, bones of blessed meat ) - he cites Chubyns'kyi However, there are a lot of new things mentioned! What are new things mentioned? Bring varenyk from Maslianka to the church - you will see the witch; Boys made cannonries (Polissia) Old women go to the cemetery to say Easter greetings to dead More details on the food for blessing and other things people take to the church to bless (niddle, crosses), horseredish ( to cure sickening and get rid of worms) At home people smear lips, faces with blessed salo. In Western Ukraine the host before coming into the house after church, goes around and puts blessed salt, blessed candle put in the barn; puts blessed food on the backs of animals (except dog and pigs); gives them pieces of Easter bread with salt. In the house: children stand on the knees - parents break dorindnyk (for them to be clever and smart). On the head of a marriage age daughter -put Easater bread (to meet a rich husband). Small baby is put into doridnyk (so that it grows fast). Before the meal all members of the family wash faces (three Easter eggs, which are taken by the girl at the end (to be pretty) Easter table in details. In Kherson region: a plate with the soil in the form of grave and oat (as a grass) on it, Esater eggs (as much as dead people in the family) around it) - Good tradition for Woropai. Rozhovinnia the same. But pays attention to the differences between rgions. In Slobozhanshchyna: shyshka from Ebread for the cow, not to get drunk; wash faces after the meal with two Eeggs and a small coin - water on the fire or to the lake. Rain on Esater - good harvest; to die on E - go to paradise; born - will be unhappy. You should greet everyone on Easter Boys running on the cemetery; the importance of bells Symbolism and importance of the sun Hoidalky for cleaning from all bad Esater games: navbytky, v kotka, v kydka hahilky more patriotic ("Voskresne Ukraina" as a respond) Analytical questions 1) Which of the following beliefs, actions and objects do you have in your family celebration of Easter? 2) Why did a lot of things mentioned by both authors disappear?
