Transcript of Academic Honesty Workshop

Let's be honest... academic honesty sounds pretty boring
What is the context?
What are we doing here?
So referencing is key to communicate, share and validate knowledge...

VALIDATE and authenticate
New understanding...

Referencing creates a common system which can protect truth by making it harder for fiction to be spread as truth
CREATION OF ACCOUNTABILITY
(who said what, when and why)

Referencing allows us to 'share' information and protect the truth.

Without the ability to share referenced knowledge - it is
less valid and could all be just opinion and gossip or worse - LIES !!!
Before we go further lets get some more context...
A rock fell on White Cloud's head. But before he died he told me he wanted me to inherit his cave and everything in it, including his 3 wives.
One day two hunters left the village. But only one came back.
Context ???
You can use expert opinion and facts to back up your ideas. Would you ask a caveman to explain facebook? But wht if he could quote Mark Zuckerberg?
the fact originated from
a man called Jim
and I see that
he referenced
Mark Zuckerburg
I read Zuckerburg's
work and cant see the fact
that Jim used and so I
contact him to
check
He sends me his reply
"Don't Trust Anything
Jim says as he keeps
misquoting my words
and stealing my
ideas as his own"
If I read your work
and you quote a fact
I can check the reference

By the end of today you will not be asleep!

• You will start to understand the value of referencing;

• You will demonstrate referencing methods to avoid cheating, copying and plagiarism
But wait ... before we start... lets see some examples of ideas being copied.
Learning objectives:
Did you

Summarize
Paraphrase
Quote
or
plagiarize?

Next time you will be better...
The villagers were suspicious but with no White Cloud around they could only rely on what Bodo said...
Wait a minute! I have a cave drawing that White Cloud painted,
which I think shows how he wanted me Big Tree, his brother, to inherit his cave and take care of his wives if ever something happened to him.
LET'S TELL YOU A
STORY...

Bodo started moving his stuff into the cave. The wives looked sad. But then, Big Tree stepped forward
They all went to Big Tree's cave and agreed
that it was indeed true
The Suspicious death of White Cloud
Said Bodo
.
LETS BREAK
THE

ICE
ICE
BABY !

Did you give any official credit for those ideas?

If you did, you demonstrated the act of

Referencing [verb]

provide (a book or article) with citations of sources of information

mention or refer to

Can you paraphrase?

express the meaning of (the writer or speaker or something written or spoken) using different words

TRY IT NOW
"Vanilla Ice sampled a hook from the song written by David Bowie and Freddy Mercury, called Under Pressure. Even though he claimed it was different. His lawyers advised him to pay the writers a share to avoid being sued in court." (Young, 2014)
Activity: Can you quote?
Vanilla Ice sampled a hook from the song written by David Bowie and Freddy Mercury, called Under Pressure. Even though he claimed it was different. His lawyers advised him to pay the writers a share to avoid being sued in court.

By the end of today you will not be asleep!

• You will start to understand the value of referencing;

• You will demonstrate referencing methods to avoid cheating, copying and plagiarism

- paraphrase, summarize and quote
Did we reach the learning objectives?
COPYING, CHEATING and PLAGIARISM
are forms of intellectual property theft.
Which of the IB character profiles do you think provide a best-fit for academic honesty?

In pairs, write down your best-fit profile and a few words to explain why.
Also known as
"education
integrity"...

INQUIRY

What IB Learner Profile
and ATLs are demonstrated academic honesty/educational integrity?

ACTIVITY

Look at your IB LP Bingo card and circle
the 'best-fit'

Think about how your
ideas in school are influenced by
the ideas of others...

Give 2 examples write
them down
Referencing requires thinking, writing and signaling.

the writing part involves

1. Paraphrasing
2. Quoting
3. Summarizing
BINGO!!
In 2014 during an SVP workshop
Mr Young said

"Vanilla Ice sampled a hook from the song written by David Bowie and Freddy Mercury, called Under Pressure..."
Seriously?
ACTIVITY : summarize

Can you summarize?
Mr Young (2014), said that Vanilla Ice copied another song on his big hit and in the end he paid the royalties.
