Transcript of How to find a book

at the Library !
Find your book
GETTING STARTED:
Search for the book(s) in the Library Catalogue (http://www.um.edu.mt/library).

The Library Catalogue can be accessed on specific workstations inside the Library or from any computer with an Internet connection.

You can conduct a search by typing in the
keyword
, or the
title
or the
author
.
After identifying the book(s) from the result list, click on location
(Main Library; Melitensia; Health Sciences Library etc).
CHECKING THE SHELFMARK:
Check if the book is available, and then see if it is held in the Main Library or at one of the Branch Libraries and note down the
SHELFMARK
.
FINDING THE PROPER SECTION:
Books in the library are organized by shelfmarks (or classmarks).

On each floor you will find an information board showing the subjects and the corresponding shelfmark.

A shelfmark serves as an address for the material held in the collection.

Book collections start on Level 2 with shelfmarks starting with the letter A and these continue in alphabetical order on Level 3.

In this case, we are locating books staring with first two letters of the shelfmark:
PR
FINDING THE PROPER SHELVES:
On each bookcase, there is small information board showing a range of shelfmarks.
Shelfmarks are placed in alphabetical order.
FINDING THE PROPER SHELFMARK:
Once you find the section, look for the shelfmark
PR
. The first letter
P
indicates the Main Class (Language and Literature) and the second letter
R
shows the subclass (English Literature). This is then followed by 3 or 4 numbers PR
2823
.
FINDING THE PROPER BOOK:
BORROWING THE BOOK:
SELECTING BOOK(S):
Location (Main Library or Branch Libraries)
Collection (General Book Collection, Melitensia, Reference, Short Loans)
Our shelfmark is:
PR2823 .A2B73
For example:
Book collections on the 3rd floor start with shelfmark
HM
. In this case we need to find
PR
.
Once you identify books with the shelfmark starting with PR2824, you need to find the right book. To do that, you need to follow the letter and numbers after the dot. In this case look for PR2824
.A2B73
Sometimes a few books might have the same shelfmark. In this case you will need to browse books by title.
Once you find the proper book, take it to the Circulation Desk and present it to the Librarian together with your
ID
or
Library Card
.
Librarian will issue this book on your personal Library account. Inside the book on the special paper, she will stamp the date when book needs to be returned.
RETURNING THE BOOK:
Return books to the relevant Circulation Desk:
•Open shelves – Main Circulation Desk
•Melitensia Books – Melitensia Circulation Desk
•Short Loan Books – Short Loan Circulation Desk

The Librarian will scan its barcode and will give you receipt slip which is a physical proof that the book was returned.
Three days before the due date, you will receive an email notification informing you that the book is due back soon.

If you wish to keep it longer, you can either renew it on-line via
My Library Account
(if nobody reserved it) or in person at the Circulation Desk.

If another patron requests the book, you will receive an e-mail with a new return date.
To avoid fines, check your e-mail regularly!
