3D LASER SCANNING FOR THE OIL & GAS SECTOR What is 3D Laser Scanning Also known as LiDAR (Light Detection & Ranging)
Camera like instrument which uses a laser beam to measure distance
Fires laser and for each point the laser hits it records an xyz value.
As well as recording distance it records the reflectivity of a surface which gives an intensity value.
Some scanners have inbuilts camera which takes photos,

As part of ongoing investment in their Birmingham Plant they required a laser survey and asbuilt model. The survey was required to be carried out in a very small timeframe to avoid disruption to the plant.

Once the survey was completed a 3D asbuilt model was created to allow the engineers to virtually carry out design work and simulation of the installation of 2 new furnaces. Asbuilt Pointcloud Pointcloud 3D
Model 3D Digital Surveys carried out advanced modelling services on the Chickasaw Barge. The barge was scanned in the Gulf of Mexico creating a 3D point cloud.

Digitals UK modelling team then converted it to an asbuilt 3D CAD Model. Made up of two storeys and covering over 10,000 sq m, the UWE conference centre is a vast building. Formerly the Hewlett Packard offices, the building has recently been acquired by the University of Bristol. Parsons Brinckerhoff the consultant engineers carrying out the refit of the building were looking for methods to survey the very complex ceiling void.

Located 4m above ground level and packed with piping and ducts conventional survey methods would have been impossible. Located 60m underground in a confined space this very large sewage inlet pipe posed a number of potential survey issues.

As part of an upgrade projects Digital Surveys carried out a very fast laser survey in under 40 minutes capturing 5 high resolution laser scans. HIGH VALUE ASSET MANAGEMENT Plant Room Case Study: Turbine Female Stub Survey Digital Surveys were commissioned by Atlantis Resources to carry out as built surveys on their turbine at Peterhead and Lifting frame.

The turbine had recently come out of the water for repairs. Atlantis required an exact survey of the female stub connector and to check the alignment of key bolt holes.

By also having a 3d model of the lifting frame they could simulate the process for a first time fit from their offices in Singapore. Case Study: Tidal Blade Testing Digital Surveys carried out deflection testing for Atlantis Resources at thier tidal blade test facility in Portsmouth. We also created an asbuilt model of each blade to be checked against the as designed CAD model.
