Dolphins swim very well by moving their tails and flippers. Dolphins swim by moving their tail up and down. Different types of dolphin swim at different speeds. Bottlenose Dolphins can travel at speeds of up to 27 km an hour, but just as we can’t run at full speed for long they would soon need to slow down.Their shape helps them glide through the water easily. They can move very fast in the water.
Do they have fur? The dolphin's skin is completely smooth allowing the dolphin to move easily through the water, and also reduce heat loss. Unlike most mammals, a dolphin's skin is hairless, thick and lacks glands. It is also kept smooth by constantly being sloughed off and replaced. A bottlenose dolphin for example, replaces its outermost layer of skin every two hours. This is nine times the rate of human skin renewal. A drawback of their smoothness, however, is that their skin is easily scarred. Their skin may bear rake marks from other dolphins’ teeth during play or mating. Virtually all adult dolphins have an array of scars, notches and nicks that they acquired through interactions with companions, enemies or the environment. Scars on dolphins are so prevalent, in fact, that researchers often rely on them as a means of identifying individual animals. Their smooth skin can also become badly sunburned. They swim to the waters' surface, exhale carbon dioxide and inhale air through their blowholes on the top of their heads Dolphins are very important because they give us a view into what may be negatively impacting their ecosystem. Because dolphins are at the top of the food chain in the ocean, we can use them as a "bio-indicator" to show the status of their environment. Monitoring and protecting dolphins actually protects all marine animals in the dolphins’ ecosystem, as well as the ecosystem and environment itself. Monitoring dolphins that live in coastal areas protects not only marine animals, but also humans because we share many of the same sea foods and consequences of pollution. Group: Mammal Warm Blooded - having warm blood; specifically : having a relatively high and constant internally regulated body temperature relatively independent of the surroundings Dolphins are mammals . One of the defining characteristics of all mammal species is that they have hair on their bodies. With their smooth streamlined shapes, it does not look like they have any hair at all. In fact, when dolphins are born, you can actually find a few strands hairs poking out of their chin. But soon after birth these hairs will fall out and all you will be able to see are hair follicles which are tiny pockmarks that the hair used to grow out of. How do they reproduce? What kind of heart do they have? Something extra / Facts What do they eat? Teeth? Bottlenose dolphins have 80-100 very sharp conical-shaped teeth in their mouth. Unlike us, dolphins only have one set of teeth their entire lives. If they lose or break a tooth, they will just have an opening where the tooth was located, whereas we lose our “baby” teeth as young children and grow another set in their place. Their Job
Bottlenose dolphins eat several kinds of fish including mullet, mackerel, herring, cod, capelin and squid. The amount of fish they eat depends on the fish species they are feeding on. Mackerel and herring have a very high fat content, whereas squid has a very low fat content. On average an adult dolphin will eat four to nine percent of its body weight in fish daily, so a 550 lb dolphin will eat 22-50 lb of fish per day. They are able to mate from about 6 - 8 years of age. Bottlenose dolphins can mate and give birth at any time of year. Females are pregnant for about 12 months. Dolphin calves are born in the water tail first. This means that the head comes out last, and the calf is taken straight to the surface to breathe.Calves stay with their mothers for several years. They feed on milk from their mother's body for about 3-5 years, although they start eating small fish when they are about 6 months old. They breathe air directly into their lungs.
They have hair at some point during their life cycle.
They are warm-blooded.
They give birth to live young.
They nurse their young. Dolphins have a closed circulatory system much like ours containing arteries, vein's, blood vessels, and capillaries they have a heart a lot like ours but theirs has 5 chambers. They also have a slower heart beat because it give the blood more time to warm and circulate through their whole body. The ears of a dolphin are small pinholes on each side of its head. Dolphins can hold their breath for about 10 minutes on average. Typically, though, they breathe about 4-5 times each minute There are 34 different species of oceanic dolphins, 5 species of river dolphins, and 6 species of porpoises If there was a fight between a healthy shark and a healthy dolphin both have a 50/ 50 chance at winning. For the most part sharks and dolphins avoid each other, though sharks may prey on ill or very young dolphins. Dolphins communicate mainly by means of sounds. These sounds include whistles, and also so-called pulsed sounds, which are often described as squawks, barks, rasps, etc. But dolphins also use breaching (jumping and falling back into the water with a loud splash) and pectoral fin (or flipper) and tail (or fluke) slaps (hitting the flipper or fluke on the water surface), as well as body posturing, jaw popping and touch as other means of communication.
