Paraphrase
The speaker in the poem apparently had a sleeping problem(insomnia). He also had another problem with his childhood. These problems are pretty much the main idea of the song. The speaker in the song missed his childhood and wanted to re live it again. But he knew he couldn't just wake up and go do that, so he wrote and sang the song based on his childhood inncoence. So, basically by saying a statement in the song; "I'd like to make myself belive, That the Earth stood still". He's basically saying that his childhood has gone by way too fast. Also the speaker of the poem would be the main character in the song. The speaker's tone was a calm and nice tone and his attitude never actually changed. Lastly the setting of the poem was an open field, sky filled with stars and a lot of fireflies.

Theme
Well the speaker in the story plainly loved his childhood. So he wrote and sang this song based on it. By catching fireflies to looking at the stars are all his childhood memories that he did as a kid. There is a statement that was said in the song that meant that life was going by too fast living his childhood. Basically, the main idea is a childhood innocence. He learned that he couldn't just wake up and go live his childhood again. To figure out how to understand this song/poem; the best poetic devices that helped me the most were Imagery and Personification. Also Fireflies was a statement said in the song that was meant as a childhood type of deal where when you were a kid, you would catch fireflies.
Summarizing
1. : All of these stanza's have two things in common, sleeping and childhood. Apparently the main character has a sleeping disorder (insomnia). This character is very lonely and doesn't know what to do, which gets help from the childhood innocence,"fireflies". He also has a problem with his childhood, he just misses his childhood and mentions statements in the song that relates to his childhood. Lastly he mentions another statement that relates to time going by too fast, his childhood went by too fast.

Poetic Devices
Here are some literary elements;
Imagery: found in stanza 3, which says; "The disco ball is just hanging by a thread"
Personification: found in stanza 3, which says; " From ten thousand lightning bugs, As they tried to teach me how to dance"
Hyperbole: found in stanza 1, which says; "If ten million fireflies"
Rhyme: found in all of the stanza's, which says in stanza 1; "You would not believe your eyes, If ten million fireflies"
Simile: found in stanza 4, which says; "I'd like to make myself believe, That planet Earth turns slowly"

Why I chose this song
I chose this song because it affects me personally, because im going to miss my childhood. Time goes by way too fast when having fun wen you a kid living your childhood and are going to miss it.
You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell asleep
'Cause they'd fill the open air
And leave tear drops everywhere
You'd think me rude
But I would just stand and stare

I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems

'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs
From ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance
A foxtrot above my head
A sock hop beneath my bed
The disco ball is just hanging by a thread
(Thread, thread...)

I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
(When I fall asleep)

Lyrics
Lyrics 2

Leave my door open just a crack
(Please take me away from here)
'Cause I feel like such an insomniac
(Please take me away from here)
Why do I tire of counting sheep?
(Please take me away from here)
When I'm far too tired to fall asleep
(Ha-ha)

To ten million fireflies
I'm weird 'cause I hate goodbyes
I got misty eyes as they said farewell
(Said farewell)
But I'll know where several are
If my dreams get real bizarre
'Cause I saved a few and I keep them in a jar
(Jar, jar, jar...)

[2x]
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
(When I fall asleep)

I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
Because my dreams are bursting at the seams
