Transcript of Mosquito Repellent
The study was conducted to determine the insecticidal property of Calamansi on mosquitoes.
Also to decrease the outbreaks of diseases caused by the common mosquito
The study entitled “The Efficacy Of Calamansi (Citrofortunella Microcarpa) As Natural Insect Repellent was conducted to determine the insecticidal property of Calamansi on mosquitoes. The said study was conducted on February 22, 2014 in the afternoon.
Insect repellents are important tools for prevention of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya. And the Calamansi juice contains an essential compound named citral which has a pheromone encouraging the mosquitoes to
repel from the user.
To test the repellent, they will use both the juice of the Calamansi and the extact of its peelings. The extract will then be added with carrier oils and put into a spray bottle. Two participants will be used as test subjects: one with the repellent while the other without any repellent.
The Calamansi (citro fortunella) extract has proven to be a natural mosquito repellent, but not as effective as the commercial repellent. It can be pointed to the essential oil present in the fruit that causes mosquitoes to behave against the presence of citral.
The researchers further conclude that the repellent must be tested: to other insects to establish the potential of Calamansi; and for the properties of Calamansi must be studied in future researches.
