Sparta http://www.sparta.net/listingview.php?listingID=1 Location Sparta is located in southeastern Greece. The Battle of Thermopylae Spartan Army Spartan soldiers used the phalanx formation
which created a wall of bronze and spears. At the Thermopylae pass 300 Spartans
defended a narrow path against
over half a million Persians. After four days the Persians eventually
took the pass. Credits All Spartan soldiers were given a large
round shield called a Hoplon, that if lost in

were enroled in the Agogye (the state
sponsored military training program)
to breed the worlds best soldiers. When a new baby was born it was inspected
by the elders, if it was not to their standards the
baby was cast off a cliff to die below. When Greece was threatened
by the Persian empire the only way
the Persians could get to Greece was
through the Thermopylae pass. Spartan women also had more freedom
than any other in the ancient world. This is
because the men were always at war so the
women ran the government at home. The only goal the Spartans had
was to create the best soldiers the

was his spear. A Spartan also carried a sword for
close range. They either carried the
Kopis curved sword or the Xiphos short
sword. Physical Features Sparta is surrounded by a ring
of mountains which meant that
Sparta never had to be militarily
fortified. Spartans were trained to never
retreat, never to surrender, and
never abandon the man next to
him. Sparta also contained its own
