Tools for Close Reading
Thinking about Thinking
is what we call thinking about our thoughts.
As readers, we can practice meta-cognition to better understand the text.
We can ask ourselves:
what questions will help me better understand what I am reading?
Today, you'll be introduced to a tool we'll be using throughout the year to become
stronger, smarter readers
. Take strong notes so you can reference them regularly!

Words of the Wiser
When what happens contradicts (goes against) what the reader expects.
A character behaves or thinks in a way we don't expect.
The author shares a piece of support that contradicts their argument.
Why would the author include this contradiction?
Questions a character raises or that a reader has about a struggle or situation.
"What would I possibly do in this situation?"
"I'm incredibly confused about..."
"I couldn't imagine what it would be to cope with..."
What do these questions make me wonder about?
Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
“Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering from the Nightly shore —
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
Much I marveled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning — little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door —
Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as “Nevermore.”

But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing farther then he uttered — not a feather then he fluttered —
Till I scarcely more than muttered “Other friends have flown before —
On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before.”
Then the bird said “Nevermore.”
The advice or insight of a wiser (usually older) character or expert.
The main character and another are off by themselves in a quiet, serious moment, and the wiser figure shares wisdom/advice to guide the main character.
An expert explains a phenomenon or event.
What is the impact of this advice?
Events, images, words or phrases that repeat over and over.
A word reappears over and over in a poem or book.
An image reoccurs in various parts of the book, often tied to some significant experience the main character has.
Why might this image/word/phrase repeat? What is the effect on the reader?
A memory or recalled event by a character, author or reader.
A character has a flashback relating to some previous experience.
An author refers to a past experience that connects with a contemporary issue or event explored in their writing.
Why might this image/word/phrase repeat? What is the effect on the reader?
A sudden realization of something by a character or reader.
"Suddenly I knew..."
"In an instant I saw..."
It came to me in a flash!
"It all makes sense now!"
