Transcript of The Scholarship jacket

Rising action
Exposition
In the beginning, we learn that the main character (Martha) lives in Texas. She lives with her grandparents on a farm. She is hoping to win the scholarship jacket. The scholarship jacket is awarded to the valedictorian in eighth grade. Martha was almost certain she would get the jacket; the jacket symbolizes all of Martha's hard work and determination.
Climax
The next day, Martha walks down to the office to inform the principle that her grandfather refuses to pay $15 for the jacket. We could infer from Martha's actions she would have just payed the money. Her grandfather believes that you shouldn't have to pay for something you earn. The principle realized his mistake and decided to give the jacket to Martha.
Falling action
Martha is thrilled that she received the scholarship jacket. She went home to tell her grandparents. Her grandfather was very proud of Martha's bravery, and hard work.
Resolution
The story is concluded when the principal gives Martha the scholarship jacket. Martha no longer has to worry about not getting the jacket.
The rising action begins when Martha forgets her gym shorts and hears an argument between two teachers. They are arguing about who deserves the scholarship jacket. One teacher wants to falsify records and give it to someone who has not earned it. Next, the principal calls Martha down to the office and tells Martha she has to pay $15 for the jacket. When Martha hears the news she is frustrated that she is being discriminated. Martha's grandfather refuses to pay for it because he believes if you work hard enough to get the jacket, he shouldn't have to pay.
Theme/ Topic
The theme : There are a few themes to this story. One is that you shouldn't have to pay for success. Another theme is that you should never discriminate others by their race. The last theme that we found is that honesty is always the best policy.
