Transcript of Jamestown
Or something from the present, that we should look beyond. 1. A base for privateers
2. Supply station for "N.W. Passage"
3. New markets to sell goods
4. England was too crowded -The main thing English explorers were looking for was a Northwest passage to Asia
-Thus English captains mapped out large parts of Canada & U.S. Reasons to Settle Gotta make money English Explorers Jamestown An Example: 30 Photo credits: 'horizon' by pierreyves @ flickr So... -Privateers raided Spanish ships carrying gold from the New World
-These raids severly hurt the Spanish finances
-This was one reason to establish settlement in the N.W. A new settlement -English investors got a charter from the king to establish a joint-stock company (the Virginia Company)
-This company would be in charge of running the colony
-The point of the colony was to make money -Conflict with Native Americans
-It's not easy to make money in the New World
-Not enough food
-Bad leaders Colony's Problems Government -Since they couldn't make money, English government took control of colony (became a royal colony)
-They established a legislature of representatives -> The House of Burgesses
-Self-government! Indentured Servitute -Those who couldn't afford the boat ride, agreed to work for landowners in Virginia
-In exchange for 7 years of work, they get the trip to the Americas
-Most never made it 7 years
-100,000 to 150,000 people came as indentured servants Conflict -The British were used to replacing native populations (Ireland!)
-Instead of allowing Native Americans to intermarry, they tried to push natives off land and replace their culture
-This (obviously) caused a lot of tension between settlers and Native Americans -More westward settlment meant more tension with Indians
-Wealthier men in the east didn't care for frontier settlers
-Nathaniel Bacon raised an army in 1676 to fight Indians
-Ended up fighting Governor Berkely
-Rebellion eventually failed, but was important
-What connections to today's politics? Bacon's Rebellion
