Similes
A simile is a comparison of one thing with another.

Similes often use vivid language to amplify your writing and paint a picture.

Similes ALWAYS use the words "like" or "as".
Simile Examples
Jamie is
as
sweet
as
pie!
(
Jamie is being compared to the pie, she of course is not really a pie, she is a sweet person.
)

The dog smelled
like
an old gym sock.
(
The dog is being compared to the sock using the word like. The dog is smelly.
)
Metaphors
A metaphor is a comparison of one thing with another.

A metaphor NEVER uses the words "like" or "as".
Metaphor Examples
My mom is a teddy bear.
(
The mom is being compared with the teddy bear. The mom is nice and loving.
)

Life is one long roller coaster.
(
Life is being compared with a roller coaster. Life has many ups and downs.
)
