Government By;Elizabeth Leifer Powers of Congress Chart Executive Branch The Executive Branch consists of the President and Vice-President.However, the President is just the head of one of the three branches. The President is the most powerful public official of the United States. The Presidents main job is to execute or carryout laws created by congress. The constitution also states several specific powers the President has, such as:
*He or she can veto, or reject, bills passed in Congress.
*He or she can call Congress into special session.
*He or she serves as commander in chief of the armed forces.
*He or she receives leaders and other officials of foreign countries.*He or she can make treaties with other countries, although they need approval by the Senate.
*He or she names the heads of executive agencies, judges of the federal court, ambassadors, and other top government officials. These appointments need Senate approval.
*He or she can pardon or reduce the penalties against people convicted of federal crimes
The constitution requires the president to talk about the state union, each year the president addresses in his speech the nation's most important issues and how he or she will address them.

*National Security Council-plays a key role in advising the President on matters of national security. The NSC includes the vice president, the secretaries of state and defense, and the chairperson of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
*Council of Economic Leaders-plays a key role in helping the president carry out the role of a economic leader. The president names people to the CEA, but the Senate must approve them. The CEA gives advice on economic policy. It addresses such matters as job growth, prices, and trade.

*The Vice President- serves as close advice for the president. Legislative Branch Congress is a bicameral body it consists of the Senate and House of Representatives. In the Senate each state has an equal number of representatives-two. In the House of Representatives the number of members are based on population.Congress is given expressed, implied, lawmaking, and non legislative powers by the constitution.Congress is given the power to raise and spend money, regulate or manage commerce, create and maintain armed forces, and declare war. Key Players Key players in the legislative branch are congress members, congressional staffs, and agencies of congress.Members of congress exercise their responsibilities by making laws. Making laws is the best-know task among congress members and are sometimes called "Lawmakers".Other responsibilities of congress is doing casework and helping district and state projects. Political Cartoon Judicial Branch Courts make up the judiciary, or the judicial branch. The branch has two main jobs. It tries to ensure laws are fairly enforced, as well as interpret them.Courts hear two cases criminal and civil. The court system is divided into two types of courts federal and state.Federal courts are given the power of jurisdiction-the authority to hear and decide a case. The Supreme Court is made up of nine justices—the chief justice and eight associate justices. The chief justice is the Court’s leader. Congress sets this number and has the power to change it. The justices are important decision makers. Their rulings can affect citizens just as the acts of a president or Congress do.The main duty of justices is to hear and rule on cases. They choose which cases to hear from among the thousands appealed to the Court each year. Political Cartoon Separation Of Powers Separation of Powers The framers of the Constitution built a system of government made of three separate branches: the executive, the legislative and the judicial. To stop any one of these branches from ruling with absolute power, they divided powers among them. For example, the legislature passes laws, but the president can veto them; the president controls the military, but only Congress can declare war. Executive Branch Legislative Branch Judicial Branch *Administers Laws
*Appoints Ambassadors,Judges, and other officials
*Conducts foreign policies
*Commands armed forces *Writes laws
*Confirms presidential appointments
*Declares war *Interprets the laws
*Review court decisions Checks and Balances The system of checks and balances is a part of our Constitution. It guarantees that no part of the government becomes too powerful. For example, the legislative branch is in charge of making laws. The executive branch can veto the law, making it harder for the legislative branch to pass the law. The judicial branch may also say that the law is unconstitutional and make sure it is not a law.The legislative branch can also remove a president or judge that is not doing his/her job properly. The executive branch appoints judges and the legislative branch approves the choice of the executive branch. Again, the branches check and balance each other so that no one branch has too much power. Rank of Branches 1.Legislative
3.Judicial I believe the legislative ranks the greatest of power because its holds the power to create laws, impeach the president, override veto, disapprove treaties and etc.In addition, I ranked the executive branch as second because it holds the right to administer the laws, veto a law, command armed forces, and negotiate treaties.Furthermore, I ranked Judicial as third because it hold the least amount of power. It only interprets laws and reviews court decisions. The end... Political Cartoon This Political cartoon is about the clash of the two houses and the bill that they have both proposed. The meaning of cartoon is that the public opinion of the war in Iraq can't be controlled or handled by the executive branch. The comic shows how the executive and legislative branch fighting between each other. And shows the judicial branch as the referee showing the U.S constitution. Thanks for watching!!
