Transcript of Chapter 2, Section 1: Photosynthesis

Cell Processes and Energy Photosynthesis Photosynthesis
Stomata Key Terms Photosynthesis is the process by which a cell captures energy in sunlight and uses it to make food
Photo = "light" and synthesis = "putting together"
Nearly all living things obtain energy either directly or indirectly from the energy of sunlight captured during photosynthesis
Ex: Grass - Zebra - Lion Sources of Energy Autotrophs Heterotrophs An organism that makes its own food An organism that cannot make its own food Stage 1: Capturing the sun's energy
Occurs mostly in the leaves
Pigment = colored chemical compounds
Chloroplasts have chlorophyll
Sunlight energy used to power second stage

Stage 2: Using energy to make food
Cells use captured energy to produce sugars
Water and carbon dioxide needed for this stage
Water moves up plant's stem to leaves
Carbon dioxide enters leaves through stomata (small openings on underside of leaves)
Water and carbon dioxide move into chloroplasts Two Stages of Photosynthesis
