Form 4 step by step - Form 5 1. Choosing a title 2. Analysing the title 3. Identification factors involved 4. Aims 5. Plan of Action 6. Background Research After choosing your topic you need to focus on what is your greatest interest in that particular topic and what do you want to investigate. Then you will come up with a research question. It is important that your research question, hence title, cannot be answered with a 'yes' or a 'no'.
e.g. What factors should a pregnant woman keep in mind when planning her diet?
How popular is the consumption of chicken among the Maltese nation?
How can the services offered by a five star hotel be helpful to its clients?
How can the various gadgets available on the market be of help to elderly citizens who resides in their own home? After choosing carefully your title, analyse what you want to do with it and where do you want to go. Think of what investigative techniques you are going to use and put everything down in what is called a Design Brief.
e.g. 'Eat bread, grains, pasta, rice or potatoes several times per day'. This is one of the CINDI Dietary Guidelines recommended by the World Health Organisation.
Through research work, mainly from books, internet, magazines and newspapers, I am going to further investigate pasta as a food commodity. I will then plan and conduct a questionnaire to get to know how popular is pasta among Maltese people. Moreover, I will plan and produce three pasta dishes to give a healthier option on how to incorporate this food in one's diet. This shall be done in the form of a web diagram. The research question is written in the centre and all the related factors that come to mind should be written around the centre. Now that your mind is much clearer on what to do, make a list of aims that you want to achieve by doing this investigation. Also give details on how you are going to achieve each particular aim.
To know more about hospitality services/ through research work mainly from books, magazines, newspapers and the internet.
To find out more about dental care/ by planning and conducting an interview with a dentist.
To look into the popularity of herbs among maltese people/ by planning, conducting and analysing a questionnaire.
To suggest healthier methods of cooking pasta/ by planning and producing three healthy pasta dishes.
To evaluate my work/ by doing an ongoing evaluation and finish off with an overall evaluation. It's time to start planning the real action. Make a list of all the tasks you are about to do, state the time frame you want to finish each particular task and also what resources do you need. Start finding information from various sources about the chosen topic. In your own words write these in the form of paragraphs under different sub-titles. Make sure to take note of each source cause you will need this later on when doing your bibliography.
After all this organised information, which apart from text should also include diagrams and pictures, write the conclusion of your research. Here you shall summarize in your own words what was found in the research, highlighting the most important factors. 7. Technique 1 8. Technique 2 9. Discussion of Results 10. Evaluation For each technique you need to do the following:
Planning a technique - in a short paragraph introduce your chosen technique and give reasons why you chose it.
Doing the actual technique and provide evidence for doing it e.g. photos, signature of a person you have interviewed, company's stamp etc.
Analysis and Conclusion - analyse results obtained from the technique and draw your own conclusions. Each technique might have different methods of analysis, e.g. bar graphs are ideal for questionnaires while star diagrams go well with tasting panels.
Evaluation - writing a short evaluation of the technique, stating what were your strengths and weaknesses and suggest ways for improvement. Your investigation is coming to an end and here you need to start concluding. Go back to your research and techniques and discuss your results. Were they what you expected? Are they positive or negative? Can they improve? How?
Also go back to your research question, and after writing it down, try to come up with an informed answer for it. That was the purpose behind all the investigation so do it well and take your time to think thoroughly, this carry a good number of marks. This would be your last evaluation. What were your strengths? what were your weaknesses? How can you improve? What did you learn? What would you like to investigate now after you finished this investigation (related topics you might have mentioned and now you want to expand? Finalising your investigation Your work has almost come to an end but you need some final touches:
Create an attractive first page including the subject (Home Economics), your research question, your name, surname, class, school, teacher.
make sure to include a table of contents after your first page, which should include the list of titles and sub-titles and also the page numbers where they are situated.
Don't forget to write the page numbers on each page.
After your evaluation, at the end of the investigation include two more sub-titles: bibliography and acknowledgements. For the bibliography make a list of sources you used for your research e.g. books, internet websites etc. For the acknowledgements, thank the people who helped you doing this piece of work, e.g. I would like to thank all my respondents who agreed to fill in my questionnaire or I would like to thank my brother for helping me print this investigation, etc.
Make your investigation organised, and reader friendly by adding various sub-titles and including pictures. Do not waste paper and so avoid whole pages just for one title. Use good english. For all this there are also marks allocated. Good Luck
