Transcript of add needed words

By Nirvana Lobo and Ruthie Reid Add Needed Words Add needed words to complete compound structures In compound structures words can only be left out if the words are common on both parts of the compund structure. Add the word that if there is any danger of misreading it That can only be left out of a sentence when it introduces a subordinate clause Add words needed to make comparisons logical and complete Comparisons should be made between items that are alike. Example: Now you Try Pierre never has and never will like pumpkin pie. Add the articles a, an and the where necessary for grammatical completeness. It is not always necessary to repeat articles with paired items. For example:
She bought a coat and scarf.

However, if one of the items requires a and the other requires an, both articles must be included. Example Now you try Example Now you try You try it: Now you try! Turkeys from Maine are far more delicious than Georgia.

In the current form, the sentence is comparing turkeys with the state of Georgia.

Turkeys must be compared with turkeys. Hence, a more correct sentence is:

Turkeys from Maine are far more delicious than those from Georgia. Grandma Ruby’s apple cider is more refreshing than Louisburg. Grandma Ruby’s apple cider is more refreshing than that of Louisburg’s. Sometimes the word other must be inserted to make a comparison logical. Example: Some football fans argue that Tom Brady’s passes are more effective than any quarterback’s.

Tom Brady cannot be more effective than himself. Hence, a more correct sentence is:

Some football fans argue that Tom Brady’s passes are more effective than any other quarterback’s. Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated more than any secular holiday in the United States. Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated more than any other secular holiday in the United States.

In some cases even if the word left out is common to both parts of the compound sentence it may have to be inserted to prevent ambiguity in the sentence. I like to read mystery novels, I like suspence.
I like to read mystery novels because I like suspence. Example My gym teacher and coach expect me to be on time. In this case the gym teacher and the coach are the same person. My gym teacher and my coach expect me to be on time. In this sentence they are two different people. Thank you for playing. Enjoy the treats!
