Uniersity of Washington Global Health Legal and Policy Solutions Seminar Series: "Intentional Injury - Violence" Thursday, February 7, 2013.
No one will believe me.....
well - founded fear of fear of community's response.

I cant believe it happened to me ....... denial , especially for professional women
Attitudes ...
anti-social
... & unethical
practices
Beatings, burns, defilement, FGM, sodomy ......
By people they trust ...
Children
Mostly, Male perpetrators ... Parents,
Relaties,
Teachers, Househelps,
Priests .....
MEDICS !
Ooops! ... It's Cultural ....
excuse me ? .....
The young & the restless
Potrayal of the combination of overindulgence in alcohol & irresponsible sexual behaviour as "cool" & "Kenyan" by public figures
Casual sex eqauted to consumption of "food" "to go"/
"take away"
Perpetuates "date" rape where the "food" a.k.a victim is (mostly)...
often unreported
middle aged & elderly males , youthful females at night spots
sometimes precedes other forms of violence eg. murder, maiming or even
chopping off body parts for illegal organ transplants & witchcraft ...
Condoning
negative cultural practices

Bad advice from religious leaders
Not necessarily "custom" because custom protected women... e.g. "wife-beating" for "discipline" was figurative of sexually pleasing ones wife to elicit a good kind of "submission"; batterers would be fined by elders ... or beaten up by his/her siblings, ouch!
Child abuse was generally not tolerated ....
Negative culture has permeated govt. institutions rendering good policy designs ineffective ....
Source: BhaChemai clan elders' wisdom passed on @ Bukusu initiation (N.B. NOT circumcision or FGM) ceremonies for young boys and girls which presenter went through at age 13 ..... yeah, only makes sense now!
Example does not speak for the rest of Kenya .... 41 more ethnic communities.
"I must have done something wrong"
"Be strong!"
"for my children"
"Men don't cry"
men generate "private", "strong", "decisive" solutions ......
Maendeleo ya Wanaume organisation
A lonely voice for battered men in Kenya
.... Because boys grow into men
UN SEC. GEN. Ban Ki-moon, "zero tolerance to violence speech", Nov. 25 2012.
"haki wanaume ni wabaya/wanyama"
resigning to "fate"
= men are "bad"/ "beasts"...
?
Bienvienue
No one is immune.....
women
How could she let it happen? ... I mean, why let it reach that level?
Unsustainable urbanisation
Meagre resources, social frustration enhances likelihood of violence
People who should be protecting them
Sorry ... no excuses for the girls ....
What time was it?
WHAT WAS SHE WEARING ?
CULTURE
Traditional "protection" for children morphed into a scapegoat for staying in violent relationships .
What about the Govt. ?
The ultimate "hustle" & "deal breaker" for victims ...
Form
Obtained only @ police stations after an incident report or online but has to be aunthenticated by a cop before medic can fill it.
Harphazard completion by some medics reduces evidentiary value
Has been re- introduced unsuccessfully since debut due to apathy by male-dominated parliament that percieves the problem as "female" ....
we must care ....
Started by survivors .....
CIVIL SOCIETY
PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS
Men & women must work together against all forms of violence .....
.... efforts to end violence against women and children must involve men
....... children living with violence
HISTORIC ETHNIC TENSIONS THAT COULD LEAD TO MOB VIOLENCE PERSIST ......
Kenya is going to the polls on March 4 2013
