civil war north south T -the climate has warm summers and snowy cold winters. short growing seasons -31 million people, massive immigration -the cities had large busnesses -economy was based on industries and manufactering -dominated by middle class and industrial elite -they great railroad network -the transportation was better then the south -climate was warm and sunny, with long,hot, humd summers, mild and heavy rainfall.great for farming. -the souths population was made up of europeans and enslaved african americans. 12 million, 1/3 slaves and 25% slave owners. -they had small cities. -the economy was based off of agriculture, cash crops, and cotton -controlled by small planter elites. -smaller railroad network. began in 1860 Lincoln in the war in the war 620,000 people died he was a war president because the war spanned his whole presidentsy he viewed the confederates as traitors, rebels and insergants proclomation emancipation it was sighned in january 1, 1863
its purpose was to cripple the souths economy and ability to fight
it freed all the slaves in the rebellious states but not border states
it freed millions of slaves, but thousands still lived in the border states
this is connected to the civil war because slavery is what started the war.
why we fight the battle of appomattox court house it was fought on the morning of april 7, 1865
it was the last battle fought in the civil war
the south surrendered at this battle ending the war
lincoln was re-elected
this connects to the civil war because this was the battle that ended the civil war.

licoln assassination two days after lees surrender april 11 lincoln said to the crow that he was giving the right to vote to blacks
a racist in the crow decided to kill him instead of kidnapping him
on friday april 14 lincoln and his wife went to the fords theater
shortly after ten oclock he was shot in the back of the head
the shooter tried to get away by jumping to the stage but broke his leg and murmmered things under his breath like the south will live
booth his killer thought killing him would save the south
lincoln was going to be nice to the south
this is connected to the civil war because lincoln was the president during the civil war.
civil war amendments the 13th- ends slavery and bans it in 1865
the 14th-grants citizenship t former saves
the 15th-voting rights to african americans in 1870
this connects to the civil war because these were the amendments being disobeyed during the war

they rented thse plots to individual tenant farmers(blacks)
farmers paid rent for there land and split the profits they made with the whites
this was similar to slavery because fomer slaves were working on former slave owners land jim crow laws the jim crow laws made a new segregation
which was a color line between blacks and

there were riots against this new drafting

the citizens were picked from a lottery to be in the military

Antietam 23,000 were killed, wounded or missing.

the battle atietam ended the confederate army of northern virginias first invasion into the north.
this led to lincolns inssuance of the preliminary emancipation proclamation

black codes- were laws passed on the state and local level in the united states to limit the power of african americans
free soil party- the free soil party was a short lived political party in the united states active during the 1848 to 1852 presidential election
segregation- is the seperation of different racial groups
union- during the civil war the union was a name that refered to the goverment of the united states
states rights- states rights in the united states politics refers to the political powers that u.s. states possess in relation to the federal government.
share cropping- is a system of agriculture in wich landowners allow the tenant to use there land in return a share of the crop produced on the land
confederacy- a union of persons, partys, or states; a league
sectionalism- one big dispute in the united states
civil war amendments- are called the reconstruction amendments because they were the first enacted right after the civil war
fugitive slave law- this law was passed to provide return of slaves who escaped the south
border states- the five slave states of delaware, kentucky, maryland, missori, and west virinia wich bordered a free state and were alighned with the union.
secession- the south seceded or left the united states because the north was becoming to powerful Vocabulary
