Transcript of CHOMSKY :
"It is a traditional insight that teaching is not like filling a cup with water, but more like enabling a flower to grow in its own way; but it will not grow and flourish without proper care"
Grammar Translation Method
Language is mainly graphic. The knowledge is constructed by reading and writing.
Emphasis is on speaking rather than writing and reading.
Many languages share their syntactic rules.
Grammar is not the same for all Languages.
Independent of Meaning.
A new-born baby can speak any language depending on the country where she or he was born.
Against Behaviourist Language Learning Theory
Language Acquisition is innately determined. Children are biologically programmed for Language Learning
Children have the ability to discover languages by themselves.
The rate of Language Acquisition may be associated with the environmental differences.
How language is defined within a community of Speakers
Part of Chomsky's Universal Grammar Theory
Idealized Understanding of a set of rules and construction of a given language
Is it part of the Human Behaviour?
a.k.a. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)
Emphasis on Interaction
Response against ALM
Criticism to Behaviorism and Structuralism: Distinction between Competence and Performance and Creativity was not part of this.
New Goals: Importance of communication aspects of Language, Meaningful Learning, Learner in the Teaching Process, Subordinate Importance of Structural Teaching of Language.
The development of the language is based in bilingual knowledge. The native language is teaching at the same time with the foreign language.
Chomsky: Difference between Competence and Performance
Hymes: Use of Grammatical Competence in different Communicative situations
Canale & Swain: Underlying system of Knowledge (Knowledge of a person about the language aspect and its use). 3 types of Knowledge: Grammatical Principles, Use of Language in a social context, Combination of Utterances and Communicative Functions
Main Objective: Teacher has to get through the Student
Use of Resources: Visual aids, Words put in context, etc.
The Context is more important than the Curriculum: Teachers can use their experiences with students who may have problems at learning
Open Communication: Let the student talk and express their ideas or experiences
Beginning Level/Intermediate Level
Modify the speech, do not force the student to speak, Grammar only for High School students or adults who have started a new language learning
It is used for academic subjects, there is more focus on the meaning more than the form
“Do you train for passing tests or do you train for creative inquiry?”
