Iwo Jima On February 19, 1945, 60,000 Marines landed in ankle deep ash and in a cloud of gun fire from enemy Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima. The Marines crawled inland using explosives and flamethrowers to empty out the Japanese bunkers. More than 6,800 marines were killed on Iwo Jima while the U.S. captured the island. Admiral Nimitz said that "Umcommon valor was a common virture." The American's wanted the island of Iwo Jima for a refueling station. The American's needed a refueling station for the B-29 bombers. The B-29 bombers couldn't reach Japan and return safely without a refueling station mid-way.
