Theme
Rhyming is lame.
It all sounds the same.

What makes something poetry?
the music of the words used...and their combinations.
appeal to the senses.
comparison using "like" or "as"
comparison that does not use "like" or "as"
what's it about
Poetry doesn't have to rhyme.
Free-verse is the way to go,
if you find rhyme annoying.

But if you like to rhyme,
then have a good time.
SONNET #130
by William Shakespeare

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask'd, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.
SONNET 130 PARAPHRASED:

My girlfriend's eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips;
If snow is white, then her skin is a brownish gray;
If hairs are like wires, hers are black and coarse.
I have seen damask roses, red and white [streaked],
But her cheeks have no color;
And perfumes certainly smell better
Than the stinky breath of my girlfriend.
I love to hear her speak, but I know
That music has a more pleasing sound.
I've never seen a goddess walk;
But I know that my mistress walks only on the ground.
And yet I think my love as rare
As any woman who has been misrepresented by ridiculous comparisons.
I Cry by Tupac

Sometimes when I'm alone
I Cry,
Cause I am on my own.
The tears I cry are bitter and warm.
They flow with life but take no form
I Cry because my heart is torn.
I find it difficult to carry on.
If I had an ear to confiding,
I would cry among my treasured friend,
but who do you know that stops that long,
to help another carry on.
The world moves fast and it would rather pass by.
Then to stop and see what makes one cry,
so painful and sad.
And sometimes...
I Cry
and no one cares about why.
My mother says rap is crap. But... isn't it poetic?
Most music, especially rap, requires the writer of the song to have an understanding of poetry. Take away the music and whats left is a poem. Normally.
It can be said that rappers are the poets of this generation.
Common, performing at the White House.
Now describe the picture without saying that it's a burning piece of paper.
What connects Tupac & Common to Shakespeare? Poetry!
PARAPHRASED AGAIN:
My girl's eyes are not bright,
Her lips not red.
Her skin grey, if snow is white.
My girl's got perfect hair, if hair is like wire,
and I have seen odd colored roses before.
But her cheeks have no color;
And perfumes certainly smell better
Than the stinky breath of my girl.
I love to hear her speak, yet she's no feather.
Music has a more pleasing sound.
I've never seen a goddess walk;
But I know that my girl is simple & round.
And YET I think my love as rare
As any woman who has been compared to Angelina Jolie.
