UN Day -
Year 2014

Introduction
The United Nations (UN) is an international organization. It was started in 1945, after World War II with the idea of making a stronger version of the League of Nations. (The League had been supposed to stop wars from happening, but it failed.) Most nations are members of the UN and send people to the headquarters to hold meetings and pass resolutions (make decisions) about global issues. There are 193 member countries of the United Nations which includes all the internationally recognized countries except for Vatican City and Palestine which are observer countries.
The General Assembly
Established in 1945 under the Charter of the United Nations, the General Assembly occupies a central position as the chief deliberative, policy making and representative organ of the United Nations. Comprising all 193 Members of the United Nations, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter.

The 16 year old who was shot by The Taliban.
Malala Yousafzai (born in Mingora, Pakistan on July 12 1997) is a Pakistani school pupil and education activist from the Swat region of Pakistan. Malala has spent her life fighting for education and women’s rights in the down trodden regions of Pakistan, where the Taliban makes it very difficult for girls to attend school.

Malala was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen on Oct. 9 2012, when she was on her way home from school. Their assassination attempt failed. Malala was critically injured and she had to have emergency surgery, and she was later sent to the UK for a more intensive rehabilitation. In February 2012, she made her first public speech after her injury, and is expected to make a full recovery following some constructive skull surgery.

H.E. Mr. Ali Ahmed Karti
ALI AHMED KARTI, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sudan, expressed great uncertainty about the future of the United Nations and the relations among its Member States. A statement of Sudan had been expected, however the authorities of the United States had refused to give entry visas to the President and his delegation, and because of this denial he was not able to participate in the General Assembly.
