‘Humanitarian aid’ is aid and action designed to save lives, alleviate suffering and maintain and protect human dignity during and in the aftermath of emergencies.
Governed by the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence
Intended to be short-term in nature and provide for activities in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
Does not cover poverty reduction efforts that are not linked to disasters or emergencies. ‘Innovations are dynamic processes which focus on the creation and implementation of new or improved products and services, processes, positions and paradigms. Novelty on its own is not a virtue, and innovations should clearly have the potential to improve operational humanitarian performance.
Although innovation and technology are often linked, they are not synonymous, and the adoption of new technology is not sufficient
The cross-application of established ideas or technologies into humanitarian settings is not in itself innovative

Development of the innovation by creating practical, actionable plans and guidelines. Diffusion of the innovation leading to its wider adoption, outside the original setting.
