Star Light, Star Bright by Dorothy Parker
Transcript of Star Light, Star Bright by Dorothy Parker
I feel she wrote this to cope with her sadness, and she was feeling lonely and in despair.
How I Connect with the Poem
Questioning what is wanted
Idea of her talking to the star
Star, that gives a gracious dole,
What am I to choose?
Oh, will it be a shriven soul,
Or little buckled shoes?
Shall I wish a wedding-ring,
Bright and thin and round,
Or plead you send me covering-
A newly spaded mound?
Gentle beam, shall I implore
Gold, or sailing-ships,
Or beg I hate forevermore
A pair of lying lips?
Swing you low or high away,
Burn you hot or dim;
My only wish I dare not say-
Lest you should grant me him.
Born August 22, 1893
Grew up in Manhattan’s Upper West Side
Experienced an unhappy childhood

Finished school at age 14 in New Jersey
Journalist, author and poet

Co-worked with her second husband, Alan Campbell

Known for her wit, but suffered depression and alcoholism
Died of a heart attack on June 6th 1967
The meaning behind the poem is to express how much she has lost, and whether or not she will live in the past or present.
I feel she is also seeking approval of her life from her lost ones.
Love and Loss
The poem depicts a woman who is unsure of what she wants in life. She is torn between material things like buckled shoes, a wedding-ring, and gold or sailing-ships and a man who has been known to lie to her and sin.
