An Investigatory Project
Background of the Study
Before the twentieth century, dubbin, was already invented. It is a waxy product and it is used to soften leather shoes.In 1906, shoe polish was not popular. But, shoe polish eventually became popular. There were even a lot of shoeshine boys in streets offering shoe shines using a basic shoe polish and a polishing cloth.
The first shoe polish that aimed to primarily produce shine was Kiwi. William Ramsay and Hamilton McKellan neither began making Kiwi to improve other brands because others do not simply shine the shoes nor restored the color but Kiwi did. This time, shoe polish products are of low-value items. Kiwi remained as the dominant shoe polish brand all over the world.
Shoe polish consists of a waxy colloidal emulsion. It is made up of naphtha, lanolin, turpentine, wax, gum Arabic, ethylene glycol, colorant (optional) - carbon black or an azo dye. Shoe polish has chemical substances which can be absorbed through the skin, or inhaled. When handling shoe polish, one should wear gloves to prevent exposure of toxicity. It should be kept away from children and animals. It will stain the skin for a long period of time and when there is direct contact with the eye, it will cause irritation.
Potato is a crop from theperennial Solanum tuberosum of the Solanaceae family. This crop has many uses. It is mostly used as a medicinal plant used to cure ailments. Its juice can be used as forstomachdisorders and water retention. Potatoes can also help you with your skin problems. It helps eliminate acne, blackheads and whiteheads by simply rubbing it on your face or make a face mask. Potatoes are said to be high in potassium, and vitamins, and minerals. They are also very moist which makes it a good shoe polisher.
Potatoes can be turned into a shoe polish by simply rubbing it to the leather. And after the shoes have been shined, the potato is thrown out of the garbage immediately. The researchers thought that it is a waste throwing the potato away. It is a complete waste of resources. The researchers found a way to recycle the waste by making an organic shoe polish without any use of machines and can be used any time until all of it is consumed.
Nowadays, appearance and cleanliness is essential to a person. One example of a product that aids us in being clean and good-looking is shoe polish. These days, prices of shoe polish are slowly increasing. It is also known that commercial shoe polish contains chemicals that have harmful effects on our skin and probably on our respiratory system. The researchers came up with the idea of making a homemade shoe polish out of organic materials such as fruits and vegetables and other common resources that can be found anywhere thus, making the homemade shoe polish affordable and safe. The homemade shoe polish can be also made by people in their own households as well
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM AND OBJECTIVES
The researchers observed that the use of commercial shoe polish like Kiwi have disadvantages. The goal of the researchers is to come up with a homemade shoe polish from a previously used potato to avoid wasting of resources. The researchers would also like to compare its effectiveness to the commercial shoe polish products that are found in the markets. At the end of this study, the researchers seek to prove that a homemade shoe polish made of an organic material is much more convenient, safer and affordable than that of the commercial one
This study is helpful to our community because it can help everyone especially students and others who have leather shoes. A lot of us today are very fond of leather and almost all of us have a lot of these. So, our product is really useful to anyone.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM
This study is also beneficial to our health. As what the researchers studied, the shoe polish that we are using now can cause health problems like toxicity because it contains chemical substances. This is a reason why shoe polish has this very strong odor and it affects our respiratory system. It can also cause colds.
The materials used in the study are abundant here in Cagayan de Oro City or in the other places in the Philippines. There has also been a study that makes potatoes itself polish the shoes directly. The researchers have realized that it is a waste of resources. Only one material is needed and anyone can find it at home but the researchers thought about making a homemade organic shoe polish that can be used a lot of times, not just once and it does not consume in a short time.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
This study is limited on to the production of organic shoe polish which uses an organic material: potato. The researchers will be making a shoe polish with the potato as the main ingredient since it alone has been used as a shoe polish and it means that it is qualified to be a shoe polish. The reasearchers will test how effective the potato shoe polish product is on leather shoes. The researchers will then compare the effects of the organic shoe polish and the most popular commercial shoe polish today which is Kiwi.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
The materials used are 30g of soap flakes (any soap), 150g of paraffin wax, 30g of pounded potatoes, 15g of cornstarch, 15g of powdered sugar, and 200g of finely grounded charcoal powder, measuring cups, pot, peeler or knife, spatula, mortar and pestle or anything that could pound the potato and plastic container or any container for the wax.
TREATMENT OR GENERAL PROCEDURE
First, peel the potatoes then boil them in a pot. When it softens already, mash it using a mortar and pestle, a knife or a fork. Second, put 600 ml of water in a pot and place it on your stove which should be boiled it in a high temperature. Add the paraffin wax and melt it. After it has been melted, add the soap flakes. Stir until all has been dissolved. Third, add the mashed potatoes. After boiling, turn it off and while it is still hot, add the cornstarch, powdered sugar and the charcoal powder into the pot and mix. Lastly, put the shoe polish in any container and wait for it to cool down without the lid on top and wait until it forms a wax-like consistency.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
OBSERVATIONS AND FINDINGS
ANALYSIS OF DATA
The table above shows the comparison between the commercial shoe polish which is the Kiwi and the homemade shoe polish. The first thing compared is the odor. The kiwi shoe polish has a chemical-like odor probably because it is mostly made up of chemical ingredients while the homemade shoe polish has a soap-like odor because one of its ingredients is the soap flakes. Next, the color is compared. The kiwi shoe polish has the color black while the homemade shoe polish has the color gray. In texture, the kiwi shoe polish is smooth and it is hard while the homemade shoe polish is rough and it is quite liquid. In the effects, both shoe polishes have the same effects. For the appearance, the kiwi shoe polish is smooth and completely black while the homemade shoe polish has bubbles and some charcoal bits in it. As a whole, the kiwi shoe polish is clean and it is presentable while the homemade shoe polish is a bit dirty but it is presentable as well.
Based on the results of the study, the researchers were successful in making the organic shoe polish. It is a waste to polish the shoe polish with just rubbing the potato on the shoe and throwing it away afetr using. Better make it into an organic shoe polish. For that, a lot of money will be saved and the shoe polish will be consumed for a long period of time because a lot of shoe polish can be made from this experiment. It may have some deficiencies in its appearance, but it can really shine your shoes and it is much safer because there are no chemical substances added to it
The researchers recommend this investigatory project to everyone since a lot of us have leather shoes. Potatoes are very useful in polishing shoes by rubbing it and after you can make it into a shoe polish with a wax-like texture. This is very useful because you do not have to buy shoe polish at stores because it is very expensive and it has less wax in it. While in this experiment, there will be a lot of wax made and you can consume it for how many days. It is also much safer than the commercial one since we do not have chemical components to add. The researchers would also like to recommend that in adding the charcoal, add more so it will really be black like that of the Kiwi shoe polish but it can still adapt to the color of the black leather shoes even if the color of the shoe polish that you made is gray. The researchers would also like to recommend this to the future researchers.
