Elder McConkie suggested that this is the age of Abraham, when many died of starvation (see The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles, p. 458-59).
Elder McConkie said, “This is the millennium of those great kingdoms and nations whose wars and treacheries tormented and overran [Israel], again and again” (The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles, p. 459). These nations included Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome.
Elder McConkie suggested that this refers to the persecutions in which so many early Christians in John’s day lost their lives (see The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles, p. 459).
Elder McConkie indicated that this describes our own time and events leading up to the Millennium, when Jesus will reign personally on the earth (see The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles, p. 460).
"I testify that not many years hence the earth will be cleansed. … Jesus the Christ will come again, this time in power and great glory to vanquish His foes [destroy His enemies] and to rule and reign on the earth" (Ezra Taft Benson, in Conference Report, Oct. 1988, 104; or Ensign, Nov. 1988, 87).
Elder McConkie suggested that this describes Noah’s day, when wickedness covered the earth (see The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles, p. 458).
Elder McConkie suggested that this describes Enoch’s day, and that the rider is Enoch (see The Life and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles, p. 458).
“Providing your students with a collection of unrelated truths will hurt as much as it helps. Provide a basic feeling for the whole plan even with just a few details, and it will help them ever so much more. Let them know what it's all about; then they will have the ‘why.’” - Boyd K. Packer, The Great Plan of Happiness [address to religious educators] (Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1993), 3. 1
Pres Dieter F. Uchtdorf – “While understanding the “what” and the “how” of the gospel is necessary, the eternal fire and majesty of the gospel springs from the “why.” When we understand why… when we remember why we committed… the gospel ceases to become a burden and, instead, becomes a joy and a delight. It becomes precious and sweet.” (Forget Me Not, CR, Oct 2011). “It is in the why… that we discover the fire, passion, and power... The why inspires our souls… the why transforms… Understanding the why of the gospel… will help us to see the divine purpose of all of this.” (The Why of Priesthood Service, CR April, 2012).
Basic Doctrines?
The purpose of this presentation is to combine the Plan of Salvation with a timeline of historical events based on scripture. It is intended that all information be in accordance with & limited to prophetic teachings.
68 And all the days of Zion, in the days of Enoch, were three hundred and sixty-five years.
69 And Enoch and all his people walked with God, and he dwelt in the midst of Zion; and it came to pass that Zion was not, for God received it up into his own bosom; and from thence went forth the saying, ZION IS FLED.
Moses 7:68-69
7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
Revelation 6:7-8
9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
Revelation 6:9-11
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
Revelation 6:12-17
1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.
2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,
Revelation 7:1-2
32 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.
33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.
34 Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.
Alma 34:32-34
7 And there was war: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
Revelation 12:7-12
President Gordon B. Hinckley - "Though I live with it, this matter of temple construction is a thing of awesome wonder to me. We are trying to build in such a way and in such places across the world that these houses of the Lord may stand and serve through the Millennium."
(1997 April General Conference, May We Be Faithful and True, Sat. Morning Session)
President James E. Faust "Referring to this great building that was to stand through the Millennium, Brigham Young announced: 'This is not the only temple we shall build; there will be hundreds of them built and dedicated to the Lord.'" (1997 April General Conference, Eternity Lies before Us, Sat. Morning Session)
What are the two great works that will be done during the Millennium?
There will be two great works for members of the Church during the Millennium: temple work and missionary work. Temple work involves the ordinances that are necessary for exaltation. These include baptism, the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, and the temple ordinances—the endowment, temple marriage, and the sealing together of family units.
Many people have died without receiving these ordinances. People on the earth must perform these ordinances for them. This work is now being done in the temples of the Lord. There is too much work to finish before the Millennium begins, so it will be completed during that time. Resurrected beings will help us correct the mistakes we have made in doing research concerning our dead ancestors. They will also help us find the information we need to complete our records. (Gospel Principles, Chapter 45: The Millennium)
During the Millennium, mortals will still live on earth, and they will continue to have children as we do now (see D&C 45:58). Joseph Smith said that immortal beings will frequently visit the earth. These resurrected beings will help with the government and other work. (See Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith [1976], 268.)
People will still have their agency, and for a time many will be free to continue with their religions and ideas. Eventually everyone will confess that Jesus Christ is the Savior.
During the Millennium, Jesus will “reign personally upon the earth” (Articles of Faith 1:10). Joseph Smith explained that Jesus will “reign over the Saints and come down and instruct” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 258).
He will usher in the Millennium. The Millennium is the thousand-year period when Jesus will reign on the earth. The righteous will be caught up to meet Jesus at His coming (see D&C 88:96). His coming will begin the millennial reign. (See chapter 45 in this book.) President Brigham Young said: “In the Millennium, when the Kingdom of God is established on the earth in power, glory and perfection, and the reign of wickedness that has so long prevailed is subdued, the Saints of God will have the privilege of building their temples, and of entering into them, becoming, as it were, pillars in the temples of God [see Revelation 3:12], and they will officiate for their dead. Then we will see our friends come up, and perhaps some that we have been acquainted with here. … And we will have revelations to know our forefathers clear back to Father Adam and Mother Eve, and we will enter into the temples of God and officiate for them. Then [children] will be sealed to [parents] until the chain is made perfect back to Adam, so that there will be a perfect chain of Priesthood from Adam to the winding-up scene” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young [1997], 333–34). (Gospel Principles, Chapter 44: The Second Coming of Jesus Christ)
Activity – “follow the earth”
The planet on which we live, created by God through Jesus Christ to be used by man during his mortal probation. Its final destiny is to become glorified and exalted (D&C 77:1–2; 130:8–9). The earth will become an eternal inheritance of those who have lived worthy of a celestial glory (D&C 88:14–26). They will enjoy the presence of the Father and the Son (D&C 76:62). (The Guide to the Scriptures, Earth)
Moses 1:27-40
27 And it came to pass, as the voice was still speaking, Moses cast his eyes and beheld the earth, yea, even all of it; and there was not a particle of it which he did not behold, discerning it by the spirit of God.
28 And he beheld also the inhabitants thereof, and there was not a soul which he beheld not; and he discerned them by the Spirit of God; ….
36 And it came to pass that Moses spake unto the Lord, saying: Be merciful unto thy servant, O God, and tell me concerning this earth, and the inhabitants thereof, and also the heavens, and then thy servant will be content.
37 And the Lord God spake unto Moses, saying: The heavens, they are many, and they cannot be numbered unto man; but they are numbered unto me….
39 For behold, this is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
40 And now, Moses, my son, I will speak unto thee concerning this earth upon which thou standest; and thou shalt write the things which I shall speak.
John the Revelator saw in the hands of the Great God a book sealed with seven seals. “It contains,” as our revelations tell us, “the revealed will, mysteries, and the works of God; the hidden things of his economy concerning
this earth during the seven thousand years of its continuance
, or its temporal existence” (DC 77:6),
each seal covering a period of one thousand years.
As John saw, no one but the Lord Jesus—“the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David” (Revelation 5:5) — had the power to loose these seven seals. (The Bible, A Sealed Book, Elder Bruce R. McConkie, CES Symposium on the New Testament, 17 August 1984, Brigham Young University)
God gave man dominion over the earth, Gen. 1:28 (Moses 2:28).
The earth is the Lord’s, Ex. 9:29 (Ps. 24:1).
The Lord has given the earth to the children of men, Ps. 115:16
I have made the earth and created man upon it, Isa. 45:12
By the power of his word man came upon the earth, Jacob 4:9
We will make an earth, and we will prove them, Abr. 3:24–25
(The Guide to the Scriptures, Earth)
CREATION CONTINUED:The Prophet Joseph Smith taught: “You ask the learned doctors why they say the world was made out of nothing; and they will answer, ‘Doesn’t the Bible say He created the world?’ And they infer, from the word create, that it must have been made out of nothing. Now, the word create came from the [Hebrew] word baurau which does not mean to create out of nothing; it means to organize; the same as a man would organize materials and build a ship.” (Mar. 1997 Ensign, The Book of Abraham: A Most Remarkable Book, Andrew Skinner)
Baptism of Water – The Flood
Gen 6:17 The earth mourned aloud, Moses 7:48, Gen 7:4 Rain fell upon the earth for forty days,
Gen 9:11-16 (JST) Covenant with Baptism?
(The Guide to the Scriptures, Earth)

Now a word as to the reason for the flood. It was the baptism of the earth, and that had to be by immersion). If the water did not cover the entire earth, then it was not baptized, for the baptism of the Lord is not pouring or sprinkling. These forms are strictly man made and not part of the gospel ordinances.
Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols., edited by Bruce R. McConkie, 2:, p.320
The power by which the effects of Adam’s Fall are overcome for all created things, including the earth, is the Atonement of Jesus Christ (see DC 76:40–43; Moses 7:48–62).
(Mar. 1997 Ensign, The Book of Abraham: A Most Remarkable Book, Andrew Skinner)
.... A great storm came "such an one as never had been known in all the land" (see ibid., 8:5), ....terrible tempests, thunder, and sharp lightnings, and whirlwinds of tornadic and hurricane proportions, swift enough to carry away people never to be heard of again.... Tidal waves swallowed entire communities, and fire consumed many cities and human bodies. The labors of centuries were embalmed in ashes... and earth convulsions of such intensity and prolongation that "the face of the whole earth was deformed" (see ibid., 8:17), these earth spasms being a revolt by the created earth against the crucifixion of its Creator.
Elder Spencer W. Kimball, Conference Report, April 1963, Afternoon Meeting, p.65
Division of the Earth
Let the waters be gathered together unto one place, Gen. 1:9-10
In the days of Peleg was the earth divided, Gen. 10:25
After the waters had receded, it became a choice land, Ether 13:2
The earth shall be like it was before it was divided, D&C 133:24
(The Guide to the Scriptures, Earth)
Baptism of Fire – The Second Coming of Christ
Nahum 1:5 The earth is reserved unto fire against the day of judgment,
2 Pet. 3:7 After today cometh the burning, D&C 64:24 The earth desires to be cleansed from filthiness, Moses 7:48 (The Guide to the Scriptures, Earth)
DC 88:88-90
88 And after your testimony cometh wrath and indignation upon the people.
89 For after your testimony cometh the testimony of earthquakes, that shall cause groanings in the midst of her, and men shall fall upon the ground and shall not be able to stand.
90 And also cometh the testimony of the voice of thunderings, and the voice of lightnings, and the voice of tempests, and the voice of the waves of the sea heaving themselves beyond their bounds.
Earth Dies
The earth will be wrapt together as a scroll and pass away, 3 Ne. 26:3 (D&C 29:23).
(The Guide to the Scriptures, Earth)
Earth Resurrection There shall be a new heaven and a new earth, Ether 13:9 (D&C 29:23). (The Guide to the Scriptures, Earth)
President Joseph Fielding Smith stated that in this verse the Lord “revealed to Abraham that Adam was subject to Kolob’s time before his transgression.” According to President Brigham Young, Abraham 5:13 [Abr. 5:13] also means that before the Fall of Adam, the earth was near the very throne of God. But when the Fall occurred, the earth literally fell or moved from the physical presence of God to its present position in our solar system. When all the effects of the Fall of Adam are finally overcome, the earth will literally move back into the presence of God. Here are President Young’s words: “When the earth was framed and brought into existence and man was placed upon it, it was near the throne of our Father in heaven. … But when man fell, the earth fell into space, and took up its abode in this planetary system. … This is the glory the earth came from, and when it is glorified it will return again unto the presence of the Father...”
(Mar. 1997 Ensign, The Book of Abraham: A Most Remarkable Book, Andrew Skinner)
BRIGHAM YOUNG'S TEACHINGS ABOUT FLOOD. I will give a few quotations from the teachings of the leading brethren of the Church. President Brigham Young said of the earth: "It has already been baptized. You who have read the Bible must know that that is Bible doctrine…. This earth, in its present condition and situation, is not a fit habitation for the sanctified; but it abides the law of its creation, has been baptized by water, will be baptized by fire and the Holy Ghost, and by and by will be prepared for the faithful to dwell upon."
Hymn #124 Be Still My Soul

Be still, my soul
Thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as he has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last

Be still, my soul:
The waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below
Be still, my soul:
The hour is hast'ning on
When we shall be forever with the Lord...
(Hymns of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.)
Celestial Earth
The earth abideth forever, Eccl. 1:4 The sea of glass is the earth in its sanctified, immortal, and eternal state, D&C 77:1 The earth must be sanctified and prepared for the celestial glory, D&C 88:18–19 The sea of glass is the earth in its sanctified, immortal, and eternal state, D&C 77:1 The earth must be sanctified and prepared for the celestial glory, D&C 88:18–19 This earth will be made like unto crystal and will be a Urim and Thummim, D&C 130:8–9 The earth shall be given to those who have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, D&C 45:56–58 (D&C 103:7). Those who have obeyed the gospel are rewarded with the good things of the earth, D&C 59:3 The poor and the meek of the earth shall inherit it, D&C 88:17 (Matt. 5:5; 3 Ne. 12:5). (The Guide to the Scriptures, Earth)
Millennial Earth
Hymn # 49 Adam-Ondi-Ahman,
The earth will be renewed, A of F 1:10
For a thousand years the earth shall rest, Moses 7:64 (The Guide to the Scriptures, Earth)
Purpose of the Earth?
How is the earth a type of Christ? "...all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator."
Alma 30:44
D&C 88:25 And again, verily I say unto you, the earth abideth the law of a celestial kingdom, for it filleth the measure of its creation, and transgresseth not the law--For more see TG – Earth (all topics)

What about the earth?
What will happen to it?
Pre-Existence? (Before Birth)
1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. (Revelation 6:1-2)
3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
Revelation 6:3-4
5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
Revelation 6:5-6
Who am I?
Where did I come from?
Why am I here?
What do I need to accomplish in this life?
Where am I going after this life?
Why this Project?
Questions like, Where did we come from? Why are we here? and Where are we going? are answered in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Prophets hav e called it the plan of salvation and “the great plan of happiness” (Alma 42:8).
Through inspiration we can understand this road map of eternity and use it to guide our path in mortality . (Elder Dallin H. Oaks, The Great Plan of Happiness, Oct. 1993)
The gospel teaches us that we are the spirit children of heavenly parents. Before our mortal birth we had “a preexistent, spiritual personality , as the sons and daughters of the Eternal Father” (statement of the First Presidency , Improvement Era, Mar. 1 91 2, p. 41 7 ; also see Jer. 1 :5). We were placed here on earth to progress toward our destiny of eternal life. These truths give us a unique perspective and different values to guide our decisions... (Elder Dallin H. Oaks, The Great Plan of Happiness, Oct. 1993)
Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles:
“The doctrine of the family begins with heavenly parents. Our highest aspiration is to be like them.…
“From the earliest beginnings, God established the family and made it eternal. Adam and Eve were sealed in marriage for time and all eternity.…
“… When families are functioning as designed by God, the relationships found therein are the most valued of mortality. The plan of the Father is that family love and companionship will continue into the eternities” (“The Eternal Family,” Ensign, Nov. 1996, 64–65).
we are not left alone to wander through mortality without knowing of the master plan which the Lord has designed for His children.
(Elder L Tom Perry, The Plan of Salvation, Oct 2006.)
A loving Father has provided a comprehensive and compassionate plan for His children “that saves the living, redeems the dead, rescues the damned, and glorifies all who repent.” Even though our journey may be fraught with tribulation, the destination is truly glorious.

The book of Abraham makes another unique contribution to our understanding by explaining the physical location of the earth in the universe at the time this sphere was created, before the actions of Adam and Eve brought on the Fall: “But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the time that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die. Now I, Abraham, saw that it was after the Lord’s time, which was after the time of Kolob; for as yet the Gods had not appointed unto Adam his reckoning” (Abr. 5:13).
