Transcript of Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Tragedy

Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Tragedy. Why is Japan so earthquake prone?
Earthquakes are caused by tectonic plates shifting under or over each other.

Japan is earthquake prone because it is on a tectonic plate boundary between the Pacific plate and the Eurasian plate, which is called a subduction zone. So when a fault occurs in one of the plates, they won't be able to slide against each other, but instead will build up pressure which causes shock waves which causes the earth to vibrate. The earthquake and tsunami has badly affected Japan's carmakers, as sales last month were 51% lower than a year earlier, which was the biggest decline since records began in 1968. The sales hit a record fall, which totaled to 108,824 in April alone. The Pacific Ring of Fire is a zone where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are constant, located in the Pacific Ocean. It is known for its volcanic and earthquake activity. The zone is home to about 452 volcanoes, some of the world's most destructive earthquakes. The destructive earthquake hit Japan on March 11th, with a magnitude of 8.9 on the richter scale, followed by over 800 aftershocks, triggering a massive tsunami. Sendai was the center of maximum destruction. As of April 25th, 14 340 have died and 11 889 are still missing. Impact on Economy. Toyota, the largest car producer in the world came to a standstill, and even other car companies. With the damage of the Fukushima power plant, there is no power. Lots of farmland were destroyed and swamped with saltwater, which made the land non arable. Due to radiation scare, milk farms and dairy farms got affected and came to a standstill. Infrastructure and production plants are destroyed, causing the economy to come to a standstill - stopping the growth of the country. Impact on People. Many will suffer from post traumatic syndrome for long periods of time, from witnessing loved ones die. Generations to come will be affected from radiation as it can lead to malformed children. The tsunami and earthquake wrecked houses, buildings and cars. It has left thousands homeless and stranded. The massive earthquake has also accelerated Earth's spin and shortened the length of the 24-hour day by 1.8 microseconds. Pray for Japan.
