Daughter of Kiyohara no Motosuke -
a well-known Waka Poet
one of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals
At 27 she began to serve empress Teishi (consort of emperor Ichijo)
She married at 16 and had a son and then later remarried and had a daughter
Her rival was Murasaki Shikibu
Served the emperors second consort Forthright and opinionated - this was uncommon in those times
Witty and intelligent
Was said to posses "an air of self satisfaction"
Snobbish towards the lower classes - this was due to Teishi's influence
she was originally part of this class Makura no Shoshi Background Personality Traits Significant Events Famous Works Also known as 'The Pillow Book'
It is a book of 320 sections regarding:
Lists Opinions of her Works Married at the age of 16 - had a son
Moved to court in 991 to serve Teishi
Left in 1001 when Teishi died
During this time period she wrote Mukura no shoshi
When Teishi died she married a provincial governor and had a daughter
After he died she became a Buddhist nun Her work was considered very witty and pure
this was due to few chinese words being used
Her work is also considered very personal - more like a diary of events and observations
It is also considered very funny and amusing
Considered one of the leading sources of the culture and etiquette of the Heian court She wrote bundles of these pages and hid them in her pillow - thus 'The Pillow Book'
