until her final year of high school, instead studying music, specifically the flute. Rosas The dance company constructed around her, Rosas, was in residence at La Monnaie in Brussels from 1992 to 2007. P.A.R.T.S Performing Arts Research & Training Studios Rosas Danst Rosas Rosas Danst Rosas takes its name from a poem by Gertrude Stein’s ‘A Rose is a Rose’ Originally the piece was over 25 minutes long There were four dancers at creation who were: Has been performed over 200 times! Costumes What this piece means For De Keersmaeker, this piece, this was her first creation with her new company.
Brought ‘Rosas’ their international breakthrough as a company. As a result of this, the company was supported by Kaaitheater of Brussels during the eighties. During this time, many performances were made in collaboration with Kaaitheater. 1992 La Monnaie’s general director, Bernard Foccroulle, invited Rosas to become the resident company of Brussels’ Royal Opera De Munt La Monnaie Upon arrival, she set herself 3 targets: 2003 Rosas Danst Rosas applied a repetitive and minimalistic style to music by Thierry De Mey & Peter Vermeersch. Rosas Danst Rosas, won the ‘Bessie Award’ in 1988. Schooling… Studied at Mudra in Brussels, from 1978 – 1980
The school had links to La Monnaie & Maurice Béjart’s Ballet of the 20th Century. Her music teacher at MUDRA was a major influence on her life.
In 1981, she attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.In 1982 she created ‘Fase’. this production brought her ‘a breakthrough on the international dance scene, performing, among other places, at the Avignon Festival. The success of ‘Fase’ contributed largely to the foundation of the company ‘Rosas’ in 1983. In 2011 De Keersmaeker, publicly accused Beyonce of plagarising two of Rosas pieces, one being, Rosas Danst Rosas, in her music video for ‘Countdown’. Initial Thoughts Learning movements After performance Thank You for watching! :) Four dancers do battle; with each other, with the stage and with the public - a fight to the bitter end - set to the minimalistic music of Peter Vermeersch and Thierry De Mey. One camera records the dance itself and a second highlights specific details using close-ups and panning camera movements
