Radar Guns are a commonly used device to measure speed in various sports. For example, they measure pitching and throwing speed in baseball and serving speed in tennis.
How do Radar Guns work?
In order to measure speed, radar guns send out a radio signal which hits the object and then bounces back towards the gun. From there, the gun takes the difference of the initial signal and the signal received which allows the gun to calculate the speed of the object.

The frequency of the waves originally sent from the gun are slightly different than the waves received from the ball, this is process is called "The Doppler Effect."

Impacts on Society
In sports, radar guns are a dependent resource to measure speed. Speed is a necessary component to be successful in most sports, therefore having the ability to measure speed is important. Radar guns benefit athletes to make them aware of their speed and help them improve. It also benefits coaches because they can determine the speed of their athletes and strategize with the speed they have.
Impacts on the Environment
Radar guns are constructed mainly from plastic and metal. These materials are not sustainable, therefore they have a negative impact on the environment. When the radar gun is no longer useful, the plastics in the device may be recycled but are more likely to be sent to landfills. The batteries used to operate this device are also a negative impact on the environment because if they aren't disposed of properly, the chemicals within them could potentially be released into the atmosphere.
