What is an ebook?

An electronic book- a text- and image-based publication in digital form;
Produced on, published by, and readable on computers or other digital devices;
Presented visually;
Includes multimedia (sound, images, film/video/animated graphics).
Some numbers:
During 2011 alone ebook sales grew 117% over the year;
In 2012, 23% of all Americans over 16 read an ebook. Up from 15% in 2011.
•Between 2011 and 2012, the percentage of Americans who owned either a tablet or e-reader rose from 18% to 33%.
It's estimated that eBook sales came in at just under 970 million in 2011;
Children’s ebooks were up 120% in 2012 to $233 million.

Of course there is no reason to think that in the near future the only place we will see printed books is the museum. There is times when hard copy can‘t be beat. But ebooks and printed books will live together side by side for sure...
