We know from research on children with intellectual disabilities that for them, comprehension of idiomatic expressions is often difficult. Try teaching such expressions to an individual disabilities. The student should have a mental age of at least 8 years. Begin by asking the student to tell you what the following idiomatic expression mean : Strike a bargain. Hit the road. Break a date. Jump the gun. If the student has trouble explaining any of these expressions, explain the meaning and ask the child to try again. Once the student appears to have learned the expression, repeat the exercise a few days later to check retention.
I did this with a 9 year old boy named Kenneth. He is in 3rd grade and is in an autism inclusion class. When I asked his to tell me what these statements he told me the literally meaning of the saying. He did not seem to know what many of the words mean like bargain and date. But when I had him explain what hit the road meant he got very excited and said it means that someone punched a road. He said he thought that would be a strange thing to do. A few days later I talked to him about what these things meant and he still seemed not to understand what was being said. He looked pretty puzzled and did not understand what they meant.
A. Describe the three ways in which our understanding of and expectations for individuals with intellectual disabilities have changed.
Special needs children now have way more expectation that they did in years past. The first way expectations are different now are the fact that there are more opportunities for these children. They are able to work with mainstreamed classes that helps build relationships. The 2nd way that things have changes are that kids now are not all lumped into the same boat. The disabilities are not differentiated and kids are getting more of the services they need. The third way is that these children are able to branch out after they are finished with school. I have a friend who has a sister with special needs. She is about 25 years old now and has a job working at a gym. I feel like these opportunities are available because people are able to look past the disabilities and treat the them as a person.
